Advanced Criminal Justice, Class 10, Period 1, 02.09.06

[OOC: After Tuesday? Easy class. Have fun. No real need to take notes, even though Tick mentions it, and no real need to keep the chatter at a minimum. I kind of want to know what happens in the episode by the time class is done, so chatter away. Class Info Post.]

The Tick was standing at the podium when the class walked in. Lockheed was in the back of the room with popcorn.

"Okay, class! After the... fun of Tuesday's class," Tick began, abusing sarcasm on the word "fun," "I thought it would be a good idea to slow things down, take it a little easy, and do a few little things today. Most importantly, at the end of class, Rory will be giving you a writing assignment. Yes, class, you will have an essay to do."

"Before that, though, we will be watching an episode of Crime & Punishment which starts with Detectives Larry Boscoe and Mark Loggin investigating a murder in a hotel. Please take some notes on how the different branches of Justice are portrayed in the series and keep the chatter at a minimum."

"But before we do that, I have something brief I would like everyone to do. It's voluntary, but I really would appreciiate it if everyone did it. For both my sake and yours, I would like you to take a vow in the name of this class. You too, Rory."

[Continued in the OCD threads which ~~will be up in a moment~~ are up. ~~Rory will have her own thread for the writing assignment, so watch for that.~~ Writing assignment is up. Give it to Rory by next Thursday.

The Tick takes a seat in the back of the room while Rory turns the show on. Boscoe and Loggin are on the scene.

[Just in case you need to ask Tick something. I'll largely be staying away from the C&P thread until it's done ~~ZOMG EPISODE SPOILERS~~, so feel free to ping him here.]

Bridge comes to class with a plateful of *fingerwiggle* buttery toast with smiley faces drawn in food colouring on them.

Bridge listens to the Tick's request, and then shrugs to himself and stands up.

"I, Bridge Carson, SPD Cadet, hereby solemnly vow that if I plot with more than a quarter of the students in this class to do something that could in all likelyhood result in my death or the death of others, I will give Professor Tick at least 48 hours notice so that he may either talk me out of my crazed plan or at least offer advice so that the potential for death can be decreased."

He doesn't add that the likelihood of anyone talking him out of something he's set his mind to is slim to none, but he sees the logic in at least letting his teacher *try*, if it came to that. Plus, pointers are always good. He also considers asking what's expected in a situation where immediate action needs to be taken, and there's no *time* for a 48-hour notice, but he doesn't actually ask.

"...Should they be letting all those civilians on the crime scene?" Bridge asks, frowning.

[ooc: why yes, i *did* stay up later than normal just so i could be one of the first to post instead of one of the last. and also, reposting, because it posted with the wrong subjectline omgwtf?]

Callisto stood and recited the vow.

"I, Callisto, hereby solemnly vow that if I plot with more than a quarter of the students in this class to do something that could in all likelyhood result in my death or the death of others, I will give Professor Tick at least 48 hours notice so that he may either talk me out of my crazed plan or at least offer advice so that the potential for death can be decreased."

She mave have a) sounded like each word was being extracted with dental pliers and b) been crossing her fingers behind her back.

"Thank you, Bridge! If anyone would like some toast," Tick looked down at the plate and felt compelled to wiggle his fingers a little, "with butter on it, feel free to take some!"

Metaphor

Justice is like music in that Society can survive without either, but it's not particularly pleasant.

"Not unless they want all their evidence contaminated," Callisto remarked, flicking what looked suspiciously like a stray piece of pink glitter off her armour. "And they haven't even bothered cordoning off the area."

"Not like it matters," Angel said. "The mime did it."

"What makes you so sure it was the mime?" Callisto asked. "They already have three other potential suspects with far more motive. The guy's estranged, transvestive, hooker nephew for starters."

"It's a mime."

"That's your entire reasoning? It's a mime," Callisto rolled her eyes. "Did you get beaten up by a mime as a child or something?"

"Sir, I won't say that." Angel stood up because this was another one of those moments when standing was called for. "Either coming to you is a good idea or a bad idea. If it's bad, I'm not going to ignore that. If it's good, then it's good regardless of how many students are helping me, how bad the danger is, or whether or not I parroted some words that don't mean nearly as much as actions do.

"No disrespect intended," Angel said. "I get what you're trying to say. But a vow won't make me change how I feel. If I come to you, you'll know it's because I trust you, not because you made me recite a pledge."

"Sure, mock," Angel said. "But you always have to watch out for the quiet ones. Besides, did you see the look his ex-wife gave when the mime walked into the room? Okay, granted, it was against the wind the whole time. But still."

"You mean the look that was immeditely followed by 'Why are you letting a mime perform here? They haven't even cleaned up the bloodstains.'?" Callisto picked more glitter out of her hair.

"I, Marty Blank, hereby solemnly vow that if I plot with more than a quarter of the students in this class to do something that could in all likelyhood result in my death or the death of others, I will give Professor Tick at least 48 hours notice so that he may either talk me out of my crazed plan or at least offer advice so that the potential for death can be decreased."

Sam wonders if this counts since he's not really Marty...

"Exactly!" Angel said, as though Callisto was agreeing with him. "He was trying to destroy the evidence."

Speaking of which, Angel brushed a piece of glitter off his shirt. Or tried to.

Trying to be more like Marty, Sam is dressed in a suit today and is eating a plain egg white omelette from a styrofoam container.

Occasionally he pretends to fall asleep in class and other times will mutter the words "Doink-Doink" underneath his breath whenever there's a scene transition.

"What's his motive then?" Callisto asked. "And don't say 'It's a mime', he had to have had a reason to kill him."

Callisto wondered whether she should mention that there might still be faint glittery handprints on the back of the shirt.

"Well, that's why I said it was voluntary, Angel!" Tick said, smiling. "It's just my way of reminding people that in addition to teaching you all, I'm also here to help you if necessary since some people seemed to have trouble accepting that on Tuesday."

"I do respect your feelings on the matter, though."

Angel thought about it. "The insurance policy. He wanted the money."

"I do get that you're here to help," Angel replied. "That's why I don't need a vow to want to come to you in the future."
