Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

"Sure, sure, whatever you say, SHOleh." He said her name slowly, taking a moment to really get a feel for how it rolled from his tongue. "But I'll probably call you girly anyhow. Until I come up with something better."

Maybe she'd get a new nickname every other day! Twice on Thursdays!

"I'm Sparkle."

And if she laughed, he would be very put out.

"Sparkle? Your name is Sparkle?"

=His name is Sparkle?!= Zeela echoed. And laughed. Even Zhahar chuckled at that.

Sholeh didn't. "That's much better than Sholeh!"

It was fortunate that Sparkle had no idea he was being laughed at from under Sholeh's skin somewhere.

"... Really?"

Because as it stood, he was already looking at her like either she was lying or on drugs, here. People never had that reaction. Ever.

"Well, Sholeh means fire," Sholeh explained. "Because I was born with a thatch of bright red hair. But Sholeh just sounds all...soft and whispery. Not like Sparkle. There are hard sounds in there, you know? Like...Sholeh." She put her hand on her forehead and pretended to swoon. "But then...SParKLe." And she mimed a quick one-two jab. "Like my sister, Zeela. The la's kinda weak, but the Zee is impressive. You know?"

That totally made sense, right Sparks?

"Ooooh, I get it. So, you like my name because it sounds kind of punchy," he mimicked that one-two with a little grin on his face. "For how it sounds, not how it means."

He could kind of get to like this girl, actually.

"No one really stops and thinks about what names mean," Sholeh pointed out. On the other hand, with a name like Sparkle, maybe they did. "My name sounds mousey."

...So, really, it kind of fit her. Sort of.

"Your name doesn't."

"Mousey, no."

Girly, yes.

"Anyhow, the meaning of your name isn't exactly spelled out for people you know. I mean, where does a name like that come from? Shoooooh-leh. Be lucky if you can find someone who knows what that means right off the bat. I didn't."

Not that he was really highly educated or anything, but he suspected the origins of her name were not exactly local.

"Which just makes it all the worse!" Sholeh said with an exasperated sigh. "So they're even more inclined to listen to how whispery and soft-sounding my name is, because it's not like they know it means 'fire' and not something like 'fraidy-cat.'"

And in just a few days, Bucky would strike a nerve telling her that her name was stupid.

Wretched cat.

"So, what, people go around laughing at your name because it's so wispy and fluffy and delicate sounding?"

Because once someone flat-out laughed at her name, then maybe Sparkle would sympathize. In the meanwhile, she was complaining about her name to a boy who had been named the hippie equivalent of Sue.

'They' mostly being her sisters, but Sparkle didn't need to know that. "You wanted to know why I like Sparkle better and I told you, so don't get all snippy at me."

"Snippy? Who's snippy, girly?" Sparkle? Totally not being snippy. Just mostly being a dick. "Your name is fine. You're a girl with a girly name. Worse things have happened, you know."
