Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

"Please!" Sholeh said, grateful to have someone willing to show her something as simple as food. And that she wasn't the only one to feel this way, once. "Is it always like this, here?"

"This chaotic, you mean?" Rapunzel shook her head with a grin as she stepped up to the table and begin pointing out the foods she recognized (which wasn't all of them, or even most of them).

"Sometimes, but most of the time it's at least a little bit calmer?"

"I don't think I'd mind a little bit calmer," Sholeh admitted, adding a few things here and there that Rapunzel pointed out. "We're not--umm, I mean, I'm not used to crowds of strangers like this. It's a lot to take in!"

"It is," Rapunzel agreed. "My first time here, I had to get away. Someone was nice enough to show me the beach," where there had been flying, "and that helped."

"The beach?" Sholeh asked. "Like, where the ocean is?" She sounded dreamy. "I can't believe I get to see an ocean. And so much green! All these trees and things! This place is amazing."

"It is!" Rapunzel agreed excitedly. "Sometimes I just run around to feel the wind in my hair, and," she looked down at her bare feet and wiggled her toes, "feel the grass between my toes."

"That must be a lot of wind," Sholeh said, giving Rapunzel an admiring smile. "I've never seen hair as long as yours. It's lovely!"

Much nicer than her own carroty red, ~~Anne Shirley Sholeh thought.~~

Rapunzel giggled. "Well, I can feel it in some of my hair, at least?"

She flushed slightly. "And, thank you. Yours is nice, too." And Rapunzel meant it. "Red is a very pretty color for hair."

"Thank you," Sholeh said. That was two compliments on how pretty she was today! "This school has so many very nice people in it," she added, sounding amazed. "So many people willing to help me and welcome me here. It's...nothing like I expected."

With so many horror stories told about other Tryads trips to the outside landscapes, Sholeh'd had more than one nightmare about being met with hatred and violence right off the bat.

"It wasn't what I expected either," Rapunzel admitted. "I was kind of scared of all the people and all the new things." So she rather of liked having a chance to try to set someone else at ease like people had set her at ease when she'd first arrived.

"Me too," Sholeh confided. And only then realized she didn't know anything about this girl, not even her name! Her mothers--especially Zephyra--would be disappointed with her lack of manners.

"W--I'm Sholeh, by the way," she added, wiping her hand on a napkin before offering it to Rapunzel. "Sholeh Zeela a Zhahar."

It felt weird to not acknowledge her sisters. So she was just going to go with the school's lead and pretend like that was her proper name.

"Oh!" Rapunzel exclaimed. "That's a very pretty name. It almost sounds like music!"

"I'm just Rapunzel." Which wasn't a bad name, by any means, but far less pretty.

It was weird to hear someone introduce themselves as 'just' Rapunzel. Not that Rapunzel was suck a weird name, but to only offer one. It was the little things like that that reminded Sholeh she really was among the one-faces.

"Thank you," she said, biting back a grin. "I never thought of it that way before."

"Really?" Rapunzel blinked. "No one's ever told you that before?"

Then a thought occurred to her, and she gasped, eyes widening in surprise. "Does everyone where you're from have such pretty names?"

Sholeh laughed at that. "I guess so," she said. "At least, it's not very different from everyone else's. Let's see, there's my mothers' names, Morragen Medusa a Zephyra, and our neighbors Samar Yusra a Israt and our village Healer Iason Akil a Zamal..."

"It's almost long a song," Rapunzel exclaimed in excitement.

Sholeh laughed at that. "I think everyone back home would be pleased to know that that's what their names sound like," she said. "How about you? Is Rapunzel a common name in your landscape, or...?"

"Oh, um..." Rapunzel shrugged slightly, embarrassed at the ignorance she was going to reveal. "I don't really know? It's just me and Mother at home, and she's not named 'Rapunzel'."

"Oh, just you and your mother?" How odd, to only have a single one of those, too. "No sisters? I couldn't imagine life without my sisters. I have two, both older than I." By minutes, but they never let her forget it!

Rapunzel shook her head, sending a ripple through her hair. "No. Just the two of us." She smiled. "Though sometimes, lately, I've thought about how nice it would be to have sisters."

She cocked her head slightly at Sholeh. "Do you miss yours yet, being away from them here?"

Oooh, how to answer that?

"It's weird being here without them," Sholeh said with a nod. "I've never been alone before. It's always been the three of us."

Still was, of course, but she wasn't allowed to acknowledge them or let them surface and sample things, so it still counted as weird. Pretending they didn't exist within her was kind of lonely all on it's own.

"Awww." Rapunzel was sympathetic. She knew what it was like to miss family. "I'm sorry," she said softly.

"It's okay," Sholeh said with a small smile. "I keep them close to my heart, and that's what counts."

*That was a horrible pun.*

=Yup.=

"And I'm sure I can find someone willing to nag," Sholeh added, a little louder than necessary, "and it'll be like they're right there with me."

Rapunzel giggled. "Sounds like you're really close." That sounded wonderful to her.

"Do you think they'll ever visit? They sound like they'd be fun to meet."

"Uhhh, visit?" Sholeh hadn't even realized that people could visit. "Ummm...yes! Yes, they might! So if you ever see someone who kinda looks like me a little bit, but isn't? It's probably one of my sisters, come to visit me!"

*Brilliant, Sholeh!*
