Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

"Having fun?" Rapunzel asked as she wandered over to the tree and flopped onto the grass, taking a moment to make sure her hair was out of the way before turning to grin at Rilla.

Rilla grinned back before taking Jims' stick from him.

"Very much so!" she said. "Have you met any new students yet?"

"Not yet," Rapunzel admitted. "But," she looked very serious for a moment, "I'm going to!" It was her goal!

"Me too," Rilla said. "Most of my friends left this week. I need to make new ones."

"Oh." Rapunzel looked sadly sympathetic. "I'm sorry."

Rilla sighed. "Yes, well, I still have Jims," she said, trying to perk herself up, "and I'm sure there are some lovely people that I just haven't met yet."

"That's the spirit!" Rapunzel declared.

Then she settled slightly, becoming more subdued. "Though that doesn't make it less sad for a bit."

"Not really," Rilla said, sighing again. "I shall have to find friends who won't graduate next year."

"How much longer do you have yourself?" Rapunzel asked thoughtfully.

"I'll be a junior in the fall," Rilla said.

"So: making some friends who are juniors," Rapunzel declared with a firm nod.

"Or younger," Rilla mused. "What year are you?"

"I'll be a senior." Rapunzel paused for a moment, then looked a bit sheepish.

"Sorry."

"Maybe?" Rapunzel sounded very unsure of herself. "If I can find a way to get home, I might leave early." Though she did really love Fandom, so maybe she'd only go home for a little bit?

Rilla looked disappointed. "But it would be silly to say no to a friendship just because the person might leave, right?"
