Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

"Well," said Valentine, with a humble sigh and a look of bashful embarrassment, "you know how these things go. Peter got all the brains, Ender all the brawn, and I guess that means I've just got the beauty."

She should not be the excited at the opportunity to try to pretend to be The Dumb One, really, and she wouldn't be if she wasn't so confident that it might actually work.

Topher quickly held up both hands. "I'm not interested."

Because she was totally flirting with him. Oh yeah. And he saw right through it.

"Oh, no," said Valentine, shaking her head, "that's fine. You're not my type, anyway. Besides, I wouldn't want to step on Peter's toes at all."

Okay, Valentine was officially The Evil One, because Topher was now choking on a nacho. THANKS A LOT, VAL.

Give him a minute. He'd be fine as soon as he got the blood-curling horror out of his system.

And Valentine was more than happy to help him out with a few thumps to his back to help dislodge the rogue nacho.

"You should really chew your food thoroughly before swallowing it," she offered.

"You should really -- not say that stuff about Peter," Topher managed with a wheeze.

Which was just funny, because she half intended to shoot her brother a text with this conversation later that evening. Her Peter would love it.

Yeah. Definitely the Evil One.

She winced a little, looking sympathetic and apologetic. "Ooh, sorry," she said. "You guys aren't quite there to that level yet? Don't worry. It took Ben and Ender, like, four years to get to that point. Good things come to those who wait."

Val might want to take a step back, because there was some serious arm-flailing going on right now. "But I -- but that -- but -- but -- that isn't good!"

HIS HEART BELONGED TO ANOTHER.

And how was that working out for you, Topher?

Valentine did her best to look innocent, and anyone who knew her would say that the effect was quite uncanny. "It isn't?"

Don't you start with him, narrative. He was slowly worming his way into that guy's heart, okay?

...yeah, he had nothing.

"No!" Topher sputtered. "He's -- Peter! A sexless being! Except for that time I walked in on him and that girl but that was horrifying."

And now Valentine was intrigued. Sure, it was a different Peter, but a Wiggin was a Wiggin. "What girl?" she asked.

Topher waved a hand about. "Rebecca something," he said, making a face. "She's gross. I had to report her doing stuff on the radio, like, a hundred times."

"That sounds terrible," said Valentine sympathetically, while she pondered how difficult it would be to get into the school files. "So you report on the radio? You going in for the new semester try-outs, too?"

"Nope," Topher declared. "That's a Peter-and-me thing, and since he's not here I don't haveta anymore." Beat. "Hopefully the squirrels don't kidnap me to do it anyway like last time."

Peter. Doing radio. There was a brief moment where Valentine actually lost her composure for a second, staring at Topher with something almost akin to horror.

Hey, she grew up seeing what Peter did to squirrels. It wasn't something you really forgot, not even after nine years.

She was going to have to dig up some radio archives, too.

She shook her head slightly, though, brushing away the moment of relapse. "Those squirrels can be kind of pushy, yeah," she said, though she never had any problems with them. Because she saw what Peter did to squirrels and felt the need to compensate for it somehow.

...

"What was that face?"

Hey, Topher had had a pretty special experience with tiny Peter bullying him, too. Maybe he could relate? A little?

Or maybe he was just being nosy and didn't really see those kinds of faces on Wiggins very often.

"Nothing," Valentine said, shaking her head again. Then she pulled another face, her hands drifting to her stomach. "Gas. Probably too many tacos."

"Gross," Topher said. "Take some... stomach medicine or something. Ew."

Valentine nodded, giving Topher the sort of smile to suggest that she was very lucky to have him there to give her such great advice. "I think I might just have to," she said. "Thanks."

"No prob," said Topher, offering Val a thumbs-up. "Happy to help."

Ahahahaha.
