Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh, yay!" Rapunzel positively beamed. "That's really exciting!"

"I'd say you seem happy as well," Mercy pointed out, "But then you usually do. I'm not quite sure how you manage that, but I do envy it at times."

"Oh, I don't know..." Rapunzel hadn't really thought about it much. "I guess... everything's just so neat?" And she tried not to think too much on the... less neat parts.

Mercy nodded. "I can see that. So... Do you have a little sibling this time around?"

Rapunzel shook her head. "I didn't think that I'd be able to help much. I'm still kind of lost sometimes myself." So the idea of being responsible for someone else was kind of scary!

Mercy nodded. "This is my second, so I guess someone thinks I can manage t. Though my first seemed to adjust much faster than I did and rapidly outgrew any need for me."

"Well, you're probably a lot more responsible than me," Rapunzel decided. Because Mercy did seem very steady.

"Me?" Mercy looked surprised, than nodded a little reluctantly.

"I guess I am pretty responsible," she said slowly. "I lived on my own for a couple of years before I came here."

"See!" Totally proving Rapunzel's point. "So that means you make for a very good big sister." She nodded firmly to punctuate her point.

"I'm not sure my two stepsisters would agree with you," Mercy said wryly, "But thanks."

"Really?" Rapunzel blinked in surprise at the idea that other people wouldn't think it was obvious, too.

"Well, they haven't really known me very long," Mercy admitted. "I was kind of a surprise to them. And their dad."

"Oh. Well, I'm sure they'll adjust sooner or later." Right?

"That's the hope," Mercy agreed. "And part of why I'm here. It's better all around if we all have a little space, I think. Not that they all haven't been wonderful to me, but I definitely feel like an outside in the family."

"You at least visit them regularly, right?" That was an option, wasn't it?

"Um... I went back for Thanksgiving and a couple of days over Christmas?"

"Giving them a chance to get used to you?" Rapunzel suggested in approval.

Mercy shrugged uncomfortably. "I don't know. Maybe. They just... they're this perfect little family and suddenly I come along and... I don't want to mess it all up."

Rapunzel frowned slightly. "How could you mess it up?"

Mercy shrugged again. "My mom's been married to this guy almost my whole life. She had two kids with him, one just a couple years younger than me. But she didn't tell them about me and she didn't tell me about them. Sound like she wants me in that family?"

Not that Mercy felt bitter or lost or uncared for or anything, oh no.

"And they're perfect. Like a storybook family or something. And suddenly this unhappy, apparently secret, kid shows up? It's bound to go badly, no matter how perfect I try to be to fit in."

"But you're so nice," Rapunzel objected. How could they not want Mercy around?

That got a blush from Mercy. "They say they do, but I'm just not so sure."

"I'm sure they do," Rapunzel insisted. After all, she would mean it if she was in that position.

"I don't know... maybe..." Mercy wasn't sure she'd have any idea to even belong to a family anymore.

"Anyway... thanks for the support. It means a lot." It really did.

Rapunzel shook her head in denial. "Just telling you what I think." It wasn't a big deal.
