Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

The only trouble with sitting alone, was that chivalrous sorts, like George, would make all the more effort to make her that little bit less alone, and wander closer.

"Would you care for some company?" Because he'd rather like some himself.

When the boy approached her, Fawn had been hoping that he was actually planning on walking by her or past her or even just near her, but the she realized that he was actually walking over to her and the distress started to knot in her stomach again. She wondered if there would be an easy escape rout, but she had a plate of food in her lap and was more like a deer in headlights than anything else.

Distress creased her forehead as she panicked and wondered if it would be too rude to be honest, but then the honest just came out of her before she could even help it and she said, "No?" with a level of uncertainty and she felt bad about saying it, but not bad enough to take it back.

Oh. That wasn't the response he had been expecting. Social convention had them all trained to reply a certain way. Perhaps that was less common in this world?

George hesitated, a few feet away. He could nod and walk away, but-- "I could sit here, and remain quiet, if you would like?" he offered. "Or leave if that's really what you'd prefer. It's simply that I hate to leave a lady to sit and eat alone."

Fawn felt her cheeks burning red and she ducked her head a moment to hide it, though it was probably too late. She pushed a little at a bread roll on her plate.

"What if the lady wants to eat alone?" she asked, and she wondered if she really did, because she was still feeling back about saying no, and so she looked back up at the boy with an impassive expression.

George gave a hint of a smile when she ducked her head. "That is of course her choice. It's I suppose why we have a tradition of asking."

"I don't know if it's really that much of a tradition where I'm from," Fawn said, with a wry, distant smile. "No one's really ever asked me if I wanted to eat alone or not before."

"Where is it you're from?" George asked. She hadn't told him to get himself lost yet. His knowledge (or lack, thereof) of regular world geography was questionable at best, but no matter.

"New York," Fawn said, catching her lower lip between her teeth briefly. "What about you?"

"Georgia. Well, the Edge of, anyway." Not untrue, simply... misleading. It was probably best to drop his multiversal upbringing on people gently."

"I have heard of New York." He was rather vague on where exactly it was, though. "Are you new too?"

Fawn nodded her head a little. "Just starting," she said. "I didn't get into the arts school my siblings go to, and I don't think my mom felt safe with me going to some of the schools in our area. So here we are."

That was the popular theory, anyway. Fawn wasn't about to start spewing her Getting Rid of the Freak theory to someone she just met...or anyone ever.
