Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

Hey now! These were perfectly good, damn it.

Tony made a point to check on Topher's sibling after all the excited shouting that had gone down. So, there he was. "Hey, newbie?"

"Yeah?" Victor asked, setting down the taco. There was something familiar about the guy, but nothing he could place. "And hi, my name's Victor."

"Tony," he replied, offering a hand. "I saw you got Topher as a sibling and wanted to make sure... well, I've met Topher."

Victor winced. "Did he tell you he got paired with a cyborg? I already told him, no poking at me with a screwdriver."

That was new and kinda interesting if the look on Tony's face was anything to go by. "Just tell him a firm no and he'll leave you alone for... that question. Cyborg?"

"Yeah," Victor said, a bit wryly. "I'm getting the idea that's a little new for this place. Anyhow, I think I shut him down."

Tony snorted at that. "If he keeps it up, tell him to talk to me. He can be very... enthusiastic about technology."

"I got that," Victor said. "... oh hey, you're the engineer he mentioned, right? Good thing he listens to somebody."

"Sometimes." Oh, Topher. "He hasn't scared you off, so I think you'll manage this school well."

Victor quirked a smile. "Believe me, in terms of scariness this doesn't compare to the last ... year of my life, pretty much. I'll just make sure I lock the door when I sleep and it'll all be good."

Not that he really thought Topher would abduct him in his sleep. He just wasn't sure he wouldn't.

"...that might be a good idea, yeah," Tony decided. "Let me know if there's anything you need for help. Engineer and all."

"Thanks. Got a specialty?" Victor asked, because it was less disturbing than continuing to talk about Topher and his possible plans for Victor's body. "I'm kind of a generalist ... computers, small appliances, basically anything I can play with."

"Mechanics, programming... I can do most things if I give it a try. I was giving a shot at mechanical prosthetic limbs to market once I graduated."

Yes. That was normal.

"Cool." Victor wasn't exactly normal; he even looked enthused. "With all the soldiers coming back? That's a huge market, man. Not something I know that much about, but what I've read is fascinating."

"The island ended up near some version of Japan where they were common place and I checked out the schematics of how they accomplished them. It's starting from scratch still, since none of their basic attempts have worked here, but..."

Oh god, nerd talk.

"Plus even to copy, you'd have to account for different specs between Japanese metals and what you can get here," Victor said, and probably could have gone on in that vein for quite some time, except -- "Hang on, the island 'ended up' there?"

"And setting up the process to 'cyberize' the human brain without rejecting the foreign material..." A beat. "Oh, that happens."

"Oh." Victor frowned, trying to picture that. "It flies?"

Mechanical island. It seemed possible.

"Or teleports. I haven't figured it out."

"Next time it does it, could we go watch the machinery?"

Victor was going to have to tell Chase about it. Not that he'd say much, but he'd be jealous.

"...I would be up for that."

"Awesome," Victor said. "So ... I'm really glad I met you. And don't worry too much about Topher."

Tony chuckled at that. "I always worry about Topher. But that's probably a good thing." He pulled out his phone, just in case. "I'll give you my number just in case. It can all be a lot to take in here. And I'm up at weird hours when I work anyway."

"Awesome," Victor said, pulling out his own phone. "It's 310-555-8787.
I'm not really the insomniac type, but if something comes up..."

"Or Topher shows up with a screwdriver," Tony joked, offering over his phone for Victor to put the info in.
