Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

"Do you think they always have a band at these things?"

Karolina had seen him this morning, and been vaguely reminded of Nico. And she supposed she should try and get acquainted with the people she was going to be at this summer thing with, unless she wanted to just mope around alone all the time.

So, this was Karolina, making contact with a little smile.

"Always? I hope so. It's kind of cozy, don't you think?" Sparkle leaned back to give the girl a lazy little smile right on back. "The Spanish is new, but hey, at least they're going out of our way to make us feel welcome. Or something."

It was the or something that Sparkle really had in mind, there.

"Doesn't look like the dorms have bars on the windows from here, at least."

"No, it doesn't," Karolina agreed. Look, she might have had a paranoid thought or two as she'd been leaving LA. "Doesn't look particularly threatening, or anything."

"Kind of have to admit, this isn't really what I was expecting," Sparkle noted. "But then, I didn't look at the pamphlet, either."

Because pamphlets were fake. Faaake. Fake.

"This is positively quaint, really. Like something right out of some kind of crazy movie. Like... all those teen movies, or something like that, you know? The really bad ones that are all Welcome To Perfect High, and none of it is anything like real life really is? This place has free food ad a mariachi band. Those movies are this place."

Karolina considered this with a little tilt of her head. "I don't think any of the movies I've seen had a talking pony."

Not that she'd seen said pony yet. She was just a little fixated on the concept.

She pushed hair away from her face and wrinkled her nose up in thought. "But I don't know what I was expecting, really. I just know this isn't exactly it."

"Yeah, me neither," Sparkle sighed. "It's kind of disappointing, actually. I was looking forward to trying to come up with a daring escape plan and everything. Tying together bedsheets to slip out an open window, maybe swimming the Atlantic all the way to New Brunswick or something..."

"That maybe might have crossed my mind too," Karolina had to admit. Before latching on to other things making her curious. "New Brunswick? Where's that?"

After the Panem thing with Peeta, she didn't feel like assuming.

"Uh, Canada?" See Sparkle raise an eyebrow. See him raise it but good. "East coast? One of like ten provinces. You must be American, huh?"

Next, she'd be asking him if he lived in an igloo and ate blubber and owned a dogsled. He'd seen the 'I am Canadian' beer commercials, after all.

Hey, she wasn't that clueless! Also she'd thought Panem might have been some small state in the midwest she hadn't been paying attention to. Geography was not her strong suit.

But at least she had the decency to look a little sheepish. "From Los Angeles," she admitted. "Sorry."

"Hey, so long as you know what Canada is, you're still good," Sparkle decided. "It isn't like I'd be able to name all fifty states if someone held a gun to my head or something. I wasn't even paying attention to what state we're in now."

No. Really. He wasn't. Lewis had stuck him on the plane, and that had been that.

"Maryland," Karolina supplied helpfully, because she did know that much. And she'd had a week to memorize it, mostly embedded in the question 'they're really sending me to a boarding school in Maryland?'

The emphasis, naturally, was what really made it stick. "Oh, and I'm Karolina. Hi."

"Hey," came Sparkle's reply, along with a playful little grin. "Good to know. So."

And up his hand went to cover his nametag.

"Karolina! Guess my name."

Because he hadn't been obnoxious enough yet, and guessing games were fun. Unless she'd looked at the sticker on his chest already, anyhow.

Oh but she had. She pointed a finger at the hand that was too late in covering up his name.

"I think your tag said Sparkle."

See? Not that she was entirely convinced she'd read it right, because it was on the unusual side.

And see? That's why nametags were stupid. They took all the fun out of these things. Sparkle frowned and lowered his hand.

"It could've said Rumplestiltskin or Bing or D'Artagnon," he noted. "Or Gretzky. I could have lived with my nametag saying Gretzky."

At least she wasn't laughing at him outright, yet?

It wasn't really in Karolina's nature to laugh at people. Not ones she didn't really know, anyway. Chase, for instance, could be kind of a laugh-worthy doofus sometimes.

"I don't know if Rumplestiltskin would have fit," she said, mostly joking. "Is Sparkle a code name?"

She had Reasons for asking, yes.

"Nope," Sparkle sighed. "And you're like the second person to ask me that today. It's just my regular, ordinary, all-the-time name. But I could probably find a way to top this if I ever decide I need a codename for something.

It would take effort, but Sparkle believed that he was equal to the task.

"I was Lucy in the Sky for a while," Karolina offered, with a shrug. She might as well have been Sparkle, though. Would've fit. "The possibilities for a code name are endless, though."

Even if some people lacked imagination and went for the rainbow acid reference. Ahem.

"Lucy in the sky with diamonds," Sparkle laughed, actually clapping his hands at that rainbow acid reference. "So, what do you use a codename for, anyhow? Just... running around, doing... codename things?"

"Something like that," Karolina replied, with a shrug and a little smile, biting on her lip. She was probably going to leave it at that, really. Best to keep the hero thing on the down low at least on her first day here.

Also, because of the alien thing. "Codename things. Yes."

That cleared everything up! Or, well, it cleared it up well enough for Sparkle, at least.

"I wonder what sort of codename I'd pick, if I had one. Maybe another song. What do you think? Do I look like a Sargeant Pepper to you?"

Karolina tilted her head and gave him a critical look, like she was thinking about it. Because she was.

"I don't know. You might need a hat for that."

"Huh. What about the Silver Hammer? Has a bit of a ring to it, I think."

It totally did. If you were a mass-murderer with a penchant for bashing people's brains in.

Yeah, the way Karolina's lips twisted said about the same thing.

Also the fact that she actually said, "That sounds like a villain."

"Oh." Sparkle scrunched up his face a little bit at that. "I'm running out of Beatles songs, here, and I don't know if 'Hey, Jude' is really that much of a codename, you know?"

Or just, like, Hey.

"It could be amusing," Karolina pointed out. "In a confusing way, whenever anyone tried to call you by it. But also not very practical. But codenames can turn out to be pretty impractical anyway."

When people forgot to use them, or couldn't keep up with what others wanted to be called. Like the debate over Bruiser vs Princess Powerful.
