Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

Holy crap, Dave had been here for a year. Up until now, he always classified the new kids at these picnics as 'newer than him.' But now he was a FH veteran. He'd been through lots of weird stuff here. He was prepared for basically anything.

Anything except for chalupas. Taco Bell didn't have those back in 1981. It was confusing.

What about chirpy, over-energetic blonds who bounced over with a plate piled high with food and a huge grin.

"Hi!"

If 1981 had many of those, they didn't often spend time around Dave. "Hi there. You seem to be having a good time here." Just guessing from the grin and the chirpiness.

"Of course!" Rapunzel beamed. "It's a picnic!" Picnics were awesome.

She cocked her head slightly. "You're having fun, too, right?" Right?

"Oh, yeah. Of course!" Dave said, trying to sound more confident about that as he went on. "I think I'm just a little weirded out by the fact that I've been here a year now. Time flies, right?"

"It does!" she agreed.

Then she blinked. "A whole year, already?" That meant that he hadn't been on the island much longer than she had, and time really did fly when you thought about how long it had been...

"Yeah. Seems like just yesterday I barely knew what a gremlin was. Now I'm almost qualified to tell other people to watch out for them," Dave joked.

"An expert guide," Rapunzel agreed gravely.

Or, at least, as gravely as she could managing while giggling.

"Well, I do what I can," Dave said. "Which is mostly tell people to stay in their rooms and hide under their beds at the first sign of strangeness, truth be told."

"Well, that is pretty good advice," Rapunzel allowed. "Is that what you usually do?" Or was it one of those 'do as I say, not as I do' things?

"When my roommate isn't storing some of his junk under my bed," Dave admitted. "But it's pretty nice and safe under my desk, too."

"Smart of you to have a backup," Rapunzel decided with another one of those very serious giggles.

"Necessity is the mother of good hiding places," Dave said. After a moment's consideration, he continued, "I'm sorry, I probably shouldn't admit to hiding all the time, should I?"

"Why not?" Rapunzel smiled in amusement. "I do quite a bit of hiding myself... I'm not really good at... dangerous stuff."

"Oh, really? I pretty much assume that everyone here but me and maybe a couple other people handle all that stuff really well," Dave said. "At least now I know I'm less alone than I though."

Rapunzel grinned and shook her head. "Do I look like I'm good at danger."

Of course avoiding it whenever possible meant that she didn't really know herself, but that was okay for the moment.

"I've learned not to judge books by their covers," Dave admitted. "Especially if the book is about whether or not someone can beat someone else up."

"That's actually a really good point," Rapunzel admitted. "I guess a lot of people surprise me around here."
