Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Frank was still more than a little awed by this place, so he continued to gaze out at his surroundings, barely restraining himself from ditching the picnic to explore the island.

If this meant he occasionally bumped into people, that was a total accident and he really hoped these rough-and-tumble public school kids weren't going to beat him up for it.

Someone was maybe a little sheltered.

Britta had gotten up to go find a good place to have a cigarette, and subsequently wound up not watching where she was going to because she was too distracted by a hot guy in some LARPing get-up (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3106232.html?thread=190359992#t190359992).

Which meant that, naturally, she was going to bump into someone else distracted by their surroundings.

"Hey, watch it!" Britta said, until she turned her head and saw that it was some new kid and she instantly felt bad. "I mean, oh, hey, sorry, I didn't see you there. You okay?"

Well, that was one enchilada lost to the lawn forever, but he hadn't really been enjoying those anyway, so Frank just laughed. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said, grinning. "I've bumped into about twenty people today, so it's probably karma." He stuck out a hand. "I'm Frank."

"Britta," she offered back, eying him curiously as she reached out to take his hand for a shake. She also eyed the enchilada, figuring the birds would probably get to it anyway. "And if you keep running into people," she proposed, "why don't you just...watch where you're going?"

Logic. Sometimes even Britta kind of had it.

"Oh, but the island is so neat-looking!" Frank pointed out, sounding a little awed and a lot dorky. "I mean, if it weren't for all the far out people I've been meeting here at the picnic, I might just, you know, ditch and go exploring. I mean, there's a castle!"

Dooooork.

Britta did a fairly impressive job of not laughing, because, okay, that was just adorable. He was kind of like a puppy or something.

"There is a castle," Britta confirmed, glancing over her shoulder at it with a faintly amused grin. "I guess it is pretty cool. There's always plenty of time for exploring later, anyway. I take it you're kind of excited?"

Ahhh, was she ever that young and naive and innocent?

Probably not.

"A little," Frank admitted sheepishly. "I've never really been outside New York before. Plus my parents aren't here, and I'm fifty years in the future, so I figure I've got a lot of adventuring to catch up on, you know?"

Re: General Mingling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
...No, Britta, you weren't allowed to smush his cheeks, okay? "You'll catch up soon enough," she assured him. "I've never been outside of Colorado much before I came here, and now I plan on traveling all over the world. And I'm from about ten years in the past, myself, so I know how that can be, too."

Because being from the fifties and the nineties were totally the same thing.

"So if you need any help, Frank, you just me know, and I'll see what I can do."

Oh, the nineties. Back then, there were dinosaurs and cavemen, right? So yeah, pretty much the same as the fifties.

"I'll definitely do that," Frank declared, with a tremendously dorky smile. "Thank you so much, Britta."

"Anytime, Frank," Britta said, with a solemn nod and a great deal of sincerity for the fact that she was being helpful and things. "Anytime."

Then she eyed him thoughtfully for a moment. "I take it since you're not freaking out about the time travel stuff that you're managing to put this all in stride fairly well..."

[identity profile] catchmeifyoucan.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sort of justifying it as being like a comic book," Frank confessed. "I mean, meta for The Flash time-travelled all the time, you know?"

Hello, future metaphor for himself. How do you do?

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"I never really thought of it like a comic book before," Britta admitted. Because she was, you know, a girl. "I'm actually pretty sure some of these people even have super powers. Either that, or they're just really good at what they do."

Re: General Mingling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] catchmeifyoucan.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Frank's eyes lit up. "Really? Wait, wait, are you serious right now?" ALL HIS DORKY DREAMS HAD JUST COME TRUE, BRITTA. ALL OF THEM.

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I don't have any," Britta admitted, "not unless being kick ass and progressive are super powers, but, hey, you really never know around this place."

[identity profile] catchmeifyoucan.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Neat."

Dork.

"This place kind of has, like, everything, right?" Beat. "Is there a giant room made out of pie? Tell me there's a giant pie room."

Re: General Mingling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
"There...is no giant pie room." Britta really hated to be the bearer of that bad news. "But...there's a ball pit on the sixth floor of the dorms?"

That wasn't a bad compromise, right? She didn't really find a lot of appeal in either of them, truth be told, but it seemed the sort of thing Frank might dig.

Re: General Mingling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] catchmeifyoucan.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Darn," Frank said. Kind of vigorously, too. That was downright profane coming from him. "But I... actually have no idea what that is."

Fun fact: The first ball pit had been invented in 1972 in Canada. Thanks, Wiki.

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
"It's just...like a big pit filled with colorful balls," Britta said, realizing that it sounded a lot less interesting when you actually described it. "Or, like...it's a pool, but instead of water or jello, it's balls."

Re: General Mingling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] catchmeifyoucan.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Britta was so lucky that "balls" wasn't slang yet back when he was from.

"Huh," Frank said, mulling that over. "Sounds kind of fun. They're soft, right?"

Re: General Mingling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Ish?" Britta shrugged.

"Actually, it's a really terrible idea. Especially compared to a roomful of pie, but where do you even come up with something like that?"

Re: General Mingling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] catchmeifyoucan.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Frank grinned. "Come on, who doesn't want to swim in a giant pie?"

Someone had way too much imagination for his own good. Way, way too much.

"But I'll check out the ball pit sometime if you want to show me, or draw me a map or something?"
