Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Some extra tables had been set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. Well, aside from the mariachi band, but at least their music was entertaining? They might even take requests!

Well, this didn't seem too bad, that was for sure. Although Ulrik was making a mental note to himself to acquire some up-time clothing as soon as possible. The doublet and breeches might've been perfectly sensible in 1636, but they made him stand out... 'like a sore thumb', he thought the expression went, here.

Please. Pinkie was a pony. She didn't even have thumbs to stick out, sore or not.

"Hi! You're new, aren't you?"

...And here Ulrik thought there was very little that could surprise him.

"Yes?" Good god, what manner of creature was this?

He'd best get over that idea right quick.

"Welcome to Fandom!" Pinkie cried, throwing her front hooves enthusiastically into the air. "It's super-fantabulously awesome to meet you!"

"It's super-fan-" Ulrik broke off, not quite able to get his tongue around the unfamiliar syllables. "Likewise, madam." Or would she be a 'miss'? Ulrik had no idea.

"Oh, you should just call me Pinkie," Pinkie said. "Professor Pinkie Pie at your service!"

Someone else had called her professor earlier, and she'd decided she liked it.

"Right then, Pinkie," Ulrik nodded. Because what else could you do, apparently?

This particular meeting was not going in any letter he might write Kristina. He could only imagine the epic temper tantrum if she learned he was someplace with a talking pony. Assuming, of course, said pony wasn't actually some sort of elaborate deception. "What is it you teach, then?"

"Usually I teach about friendship or parties, but since it's summer, I thought I'd give history a try."

"Hey, dude. Want to buy a watch?"

Okay, she only had the one she was wearing. But this guy looked like he might still buy one.

"I'm Grace."

Ulrik of House Oldenburg, Prince of Denmark, was not born yesterday, to use another American saying.

"Sadly, Grace, I am without any of your local currency, so I'll have to decline."

Kenzi grinned. Good one, although it did sound like he wasn't around here, so that might be legit. "Want to promise to buy a watch when you change your money? Want a guide to place where you can do that? For a small fee?"

It was totally legit, considering it was printed nearly four hundred years and a universe to the left ago. "How small a fee are we talking, here?"

"Saaay-- four percent?" She would be happy with two percent; figure the guy had a couple hundred bucks, maybe a bit more, and she'd wind up with enough for lunch and maybe a bit over. "Just to make sure you don't get short-changed, can set up a bank account and ATM card easy, maybe find you a cell phone?"

"I don't know, I have a school-assigned sibling who I'm fairly sure is supposed to help me with things like that for free," Ulrik pointed out.

Kenzi pouted, then grinned again. "For a diet Coke?"

Ulrik's eyes widened. Coke was one of those things he'd heard of, but had been long gone by the time he had the chance to meet any Americans.

"Show me where I can obtain some, and I will gladly share with you."

"Yes!" Kenzi punched the air, and hopped off her perch. "I think we should hit Cafe Luke's, they've got the best food and drinks." And it was more fun when someone else paid! ... she'd even tell him her real name then.

Petra had seen a couple of people handle it well today, but this guy seemed like he might need reassurance, so she headed over to him to let him know, "Hey, I just want to let you know, the pink pony's totally real, the rest of us see her, too. You're not going crazy."

"That is- somewhat reassuring, I suppose," Ulrik said after a moment's consideration. "The not going crazy part. That such a creature exists... I'm not entirely sure what to make of that."

"She's from some other...I don't know, universe," Petra explained. "Where everybody is I guess a technicolor talking pony." What she'd gotten from Pinkie that time she helped her type a letter was kind of vague. "She's actually really nice? She just doesn't so much get that meeting her makes most people assume they're really high."

She smiled at him and added, "Hi, I'm Petra West. Welcome to Fandom High."

"Another universe," Ulrik echoed, taking a deep breath. "This continues to get stranger. It's a pleasure to meet you, Petra, I am Ulrik- um, Oldenburg." There was just the slightest hesitation with the surname there, borne of the fact that he didn't generally use one.

"Pleased to meet you, Ulrik um Oldenburg," Petra teased. "Where are you from? I'm not great with accents," she admitted. "And you get used to it, you know? I mean, no, there's always something new, but the initial 'everything is nuts' curve, you get over that and learn to just sort of roll with it. I promise."

"Hillerød," he told her. "That's in Denmark," he added after a moment. "That sounds... a lot like home, actually, although none of our ponies have yet to talk."

Something for which he was thankful, as he did not want to see the sort of trouble Kristina and a talking pony could get in to.

"Are they pink, though?" Petra had to ask. "Because if they are my inner six-year-old and I might have to pay a visit. And I'm from Rhode Island. Do you know where that is? I swear I'm not trying to be patronizing," she added quickly, "I just don't assume everyone knows American geography. Even other Americans." Pageants were a depressing crash course in having to explain you didn't live on an actual island.

"They're not pink," Ulrik informed her solemnly, "I am sorry to disappoint. I've seen Rhode Island on a map?" he offered. "Although I'm not entirely sure it exists where I'm from," he had to admit.
