Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Tyrion was on his third semester, and -- since Daenerys was gone for the summer -- seemed to be the sole representative of his world.

This felt like some sort of triumph.

He was dressed in proper Westerosi garb as he looked about, trying to suss out any special challenges the summer might bring.

When one was of a particular stature, one tended to notice people of a like height. This was especially true if one also happened to have neighboring apartments and offices. So Trick had seen Tyrion before--had even learned his name--but they'd never really had a chance to talk much before.

The welcome picnic seemed to be a good place to start, no?

"Hello," Trick said making his way over to Tyrion's side with a cup of coffee. "That is an excellent tunic. I assume your tailor is off-island?"

"At home," Tyrion said, running an idle finger over the embroidery. "I got my assistant to have some modern things made for me off-island, but it feels fake to wear those at this. I prefer to present myself as I usually am."

He smiled over at Trick, a bit apprehensive. He'd spoken to only a handful of other dwarves in his life, mostly mummers -- but, of course, he remembered every one.

"You're called Trick, aren't you?"

"I am," Trick said, giving Tyrion a small bow. "And you're Lord Tyrion, are you not?"

He offered Tyrion a small smile. "I hope you don't mind the company, but I just finished talking to my teaching buddy." He pointed through the crowd at Steve. "And thought it might be nice to talk to someone that I don't come knee-high to."

Not the most diplomatic thing to say, perhaps, but with enough self-aware irony to realize it. They were two men of a common height. Not acknowledging seemed pointless.

"I never mind company," Tyrion answered. It was even almost true.

He squinted over. "Ah. Not quite a mountain who rides, but he's ... formidable. Taller than my brother."

He pointed to Yakko. "Ser Yakko there would be my teaching buddy."

Trick glanced over to where Tyrion was pointing, blinked, and glanced again. Even dealing with under-Fae didn't give him any idea just what this 'Ser Yakko' was.

"He, uhh..." Hello loss for words. Trick didn't often make your acquaintance. "I see."

He just wasn't sure what it is he was seeing.

"He said he was a Warner Brother," Tyrion explained. "I've ... not the pleasure of knowing what that is, but it seemed rude to ask for further information. It looks like you're no better informed."

"I'm afraid I'm not," Trick said, shaking his head. "As the new professor of cryptozoology, I'm worried about what that says about my qualifications."

He could name hundreds of distinct Fae species off the top of his head and had access to countless more in his books and had never even heard of a Warner...whatever.

"We've added a class in cryptozoology?" Tyrion asked. "What is that, wargs and dragons and things that bump about in the night?"

His tone wasn't entirely dismissive, just that of a born skeptic.

"Anyhow," he added. "I suppose I should be grateful an expert doesn't know what to make of him either."

"Well, the class is called ghoulies and ghosties and wee Faery beasties," Trick said mildly. "I'm assuming most of the students are bright enough to recognize a dragon if they spot one. Though adding a class on wargs might not be a bad plan, either."

"Ghoulies and ghosties and wee Faery beasties," Tyrion repeated, liking the rhythm of it. "All real in your world, or are you teaching to the legends? We hadn't had magic creatures anywhere anyone would want to go in centuries, though that -- seems to be changing."

"They're real enough, though most people don't know it," Trick said wryly. "You'd be amazed how willing people are to accept the utterly absurd in order to keep their worldviews simple and uncluttered."

[identity profile] halfman-lion.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
"I doubt very much I'd be amazed, but I take your point," Tyrion told him. "People don't like thinking too hard."

[identity profile] nohattrick.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm starting to think people have become allergic to books," Trick bitched noted. "Honestly, is picking up a text and flipping through it that hard?"

[identity profile] halfman-lion.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Some people can get by without reading," Tyrion said. "And then the rest of them think they can follow, and don't know how very much they don't know." He smiled. "This is one of my favorite subjects, you know. Though, you will find most of the students here aren't too overwhelmingly dull."

[identity profile] nohattrick.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"That's a comfort," Trick said, meaning it. "I've been on the island almost a half-year and still barely recognize all the faces, never mind getting to know everyone. I'm not usually that much of a hermit, but..."

He shrugged. It had been years since he'd had to put effort into socializing, especially with people who didn't know who he was. He'd fallen out of the habit.

"Really, I only signed up to teach for access to the library," he joked.

"I wouldn't blame you if you did," Tyrion said. "I've never seen a better collection, and not heard of one anyone outside the Faith had access to."

"And don't call it being a hermit," he added. "Call it 'being selective.' It sounds better."

"Well, I've finally gotten tired of even my own rarefied company, so I'm glad I've ventured out and about a little," Trick said. "And if I've managed to meet your standards, Lord Tyrion, we'll have to meet up some evening and talk books over fine alcohol."

He was a bartender. Damn right he had good alcohol.

"Absolutely," Tyrion promised. "Or stop by my offices. I'm in them
Thursdays, and in truth there's not so much to do"

Re: Meet Your Teachers [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] nohattrick.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Huh," Trick said. "Office hours. I should probably...have some of those."

He'd gotten an office along with the teaching gig, so...yeah. He should probably find it and whatnot.

"My class is on Thursday, should you ever decide to drop by. I'll get you believing in magical creatures yet."
