Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Funnily enough, Karolina had her nametag on and was scanning the crowd for a Lex. It was only natural that the two should meet!

"Lex, right?" she checked as she approached, even though she'd just read the name on is tag. It just seemed polite. "Hi. I'm Karolina, your, uh... sister?"

"That's right," Lex said, smiling and extending a hand. "It's a thing the school does to get the newbies up to speed. Not that I exactly mind new family members." Given how wonderfully functional the Luthors were.

"I guess I don't either," Karolina admitted, smile turning a little more wry as she shook Lex's hand.

Her parents were dead, she had no siblings, and if she had any other living relatives, they were probably all on Majesdane. Yeah.

"And I haven't been to boarding school before, so I appreciate the help."

"I've spent most of my life in them, so I should be able to answer most of your questions," Lex explained. "Of course, this isn't exactly your usual boarding school."

"There was a talking cat on the shuttle over here." So, yeah. She had already picked up on that fact. "And even before that, I was uh, told some of the students are somewhat special."

Because that was why she was here.

"Talking cat's a new one," Lex said. "But yeah, that kind of only scratches the surface."

"So, what's below the surface?" Karolina asked, not seeming particularly perturbed by the prospect. She'd dealt with a lot of weird stuff before. "Not more talking animals, then?"

"Not that I'm aware of," Lex said. "But it's not unknown for students to randomly change into them."

Well, now there was a pause. Because that was new.

"Like... shapeshifters?"

Because that sounded like a villainous plot or something, even if Lex didn't seem too worried about it.

"Otter," Karolina repeated. Yes, that was what he'd said, and she was just... Okay. "It's not permanent, is it?"

Not that she wasn't already wondering what it would be like to be an otter. Bet their lives were less complicated.

"Well, different people seem to turn into different things," Lex added. "But so far it's not. Though turning back can be awkward."

Though really, was there a way to turn back from being animal-shaped that wasn't awkward?

"Oh. ...Oh." Yes, there came the blush on Karolina's cheeks as she got it. "Yeah, that's -- I can see how that would be awkward. Yes."

"Yeah," Lex agreed. "So did they spring the co-ed dorms on you yet?"

That was a nice subtle subject change there.

Karolina shook her head, both in response and because she was still trying to get the previous horro out of her head.

"No." Though it wasn't much of a shock. "But I've been, uh, living with some friends lately. So it's not that new for me."

"My last school was all boys, so it was for me," Lex said. "Though maybe you lucked out and got another girl. Who might even be from this century."

"I don't really mind either way." There were reasons a girl could turn out to be more awkward than a boy, even. "Is time travel something that happens a lot here?"

That, at least, didn't weird her out much anymore. Even if she was yet to get whisked off to 1907, herself.

"A bit, the island's on an interdimensional nexus," Lex explained. "2012's about fifteen years into my future, and my roommate's from Renaissance Italy."

Karolina was just choosing to take it in stride that apparently she was a little bit in the future right now, too.

"Interdimensional nexus?" she asked instead. "What dimensions?"
