fandomhigh | Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Otter," Karolina repeated. Yes, that was what he'd said, and she was just... Okay. "It's not permanent, is it?"

Not that she wasn't already wondering what it would be like to be an otter. Bet their lives were less complicated.

"Well, different people seem to turn into different things," Lex added. "But so far it's not. Though turning back can be awkward."

"Awkward like how?"

Though really, was there a way to turn back from being animal-shaped that wasn't awkward?

"Like your clothes usually don't change with you?"

Or you have a habit of changing while in the shower.

"Oh. ...Oh." Yes, there came the blush on Karolina's cheeks as she got it. "Yeah, that's -- I can see how that would be awkward. Yes."

"Yeah," Lex agreed. "So did they spring the co-ed dorms on you yet?"

That was a nice subtle subject change there.

Karolina shook her head, both in response and because she was still trying to get the previous horro out of her head.

"No." Though it wasn't much of a shock. "But I've been, uh, living with some friends lately. So it's not that new for me."

"My last school was all boys, so it was for me," Lex said. "Though maybe you lucked out and got another girl. Who might even be from this century."

"I don't really mind either way." There were reasons a girl could turn out to be more awkward than a boy, even. "Is time travel something that happens a lot here?"

That, at least, didn't weird her out much anymore. Even if she was yet to get whisked off to 1907, herself.

"A bit, the island's on an interdimensional nexus," Lex explained. "2012's about fifteen years into my future, and my roommate's from Renaissance Italy."

Karolina was just choosing to take it in stride that apparently she was a little bit in the future right now, too.

"Interdimensional nexus?" she asked instead. "What dimensions?"

"If I had to guess, I'd say all of them."

"Uh huh."

That didn't really clear it up all that much. And yet it still kind of did.

"Wow."

"Kind of trippy, right?" Lex grinned. "There was a weekend a couple of months back where my teenage kid showed up."

"Um...?"

She was going to need a little help understanding what he meant by that.

"I know it sounds weird," Lex said. "But there was this portal, and lots of people's kids showed up for the weekend." He still quite wasn't over the idea one day he'd have a kid and not screw him up.

Of course that might have been because he wasn't involved in the raising of his half-alien clone baby, but he didn't know that.

"That doesn't sound any less weird," Karolina felt obligated to tell him. "But, I don't know. Maybe... it'll sound less so after I get a chance to get my bearings?"

So optimistic.

"The really weird stuff doesn't happen that often," Lex assured her. "Most of the time it's just food rain and gremlin bites."

"Gremlin bites?" Karolina repeated. Then she made a face at herself, because seriously. "Sorry, I'm starting to sound like a parrot."

"It's a lot to take in." And one day Lex would get better at exposition. "They're small green things, sharp teeth, hallucinogenic venom."

You know, Karolina really wished she hadn't been buying any of this. She really did.

She brushed her hair away from her face, frowning a little. "Okay," she said. "I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for those."

To be honest, Lex kind of wished he was just messing with her. "Also, the talking pink pony who's probably going to offer you a cupcake today? Not a hallucination."

"Okay," Karolina nodded, with the slightly dazed look of someone who was trying her best to take this all in. It wasn't that weird if you just looked at all the things individually, but as a whole... Yeah. "This, uh, this gets easier to process, right?"

"Eventually," Lex said. "You'll probably be ready to traumatise newbies by the next picnic."

"Okay," she repeated. Not feeling particularly confident in that, but she guessed she'd get over it. "I definitely hope so."
