Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It didn't take William very long to pick out the teacher who was dressed- well. Closer to his own style than the majority of Fandom's residents. If somewhat more sloppily.

In any case, that observation had him wandering over to the teacher in question and putting forth an inquiry: "What year is it, where you're from?"

Ah, someone dressed sensibly. There's a good lad. "Eighteen ninety one, last I checked."

"I thought so!" William beamed. "Well, not the exact year, I admit. But I figured you must not be too far off from my own time." A beat. "Eighteen-eighty." Hopefully he'd figured out by now that it was certainly not eighteen anything around here.

Holmes' eyes lit up for a moment. "Ah, a fellow lost lamb. How lucky to find each other."

"Not luck," William corrected. "Just a matter of observation." He then seemed to realise it might be slightly rude to correct someone who was presumably a teacher without even introducing himself, and so: "William Murdoch. Welcome to Fandom, if you haven't already heard that a dozen times over."

"A pleasure, Mr. Murdoch. The name is Holmes," he replied with a sharp grin. "An observation, you said?"

"The cut of your jacket," William informed him. "Your shoes. Not typical of someone from this cen- did you say Holmes?" Perhaps he was Sherlock's ancestor? Or it could be a coincidence. There were, he knew, at least two other Murdochs in Fandom, albeit with a slight orthographical difference.

"It's the cheekbones that give it away, isn't it?" Holmes asked, circling poor, poor William like a shark. "Your classmates took me for a vagrant."

Re: Meet Your Teachers [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] faithandscience.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's absurd," William dismissed. "A vagrant's clothing would be far more threadbare. And unlikely to consist of matching pieces. Someone's already told you of the other Holmes who was here, then?" he checked. "Are you related?"

"I find it hard to believe I might be." It would imply things. "Unless my dearest brother has finally given into continuing the family name."

"Forgive the familiarity then, but do you have a first name, Mr. Holmes?" William wasn't quite sure what to make of where this was heading.

"Forgiveness granted," he said with an idle glance. "Sherlock Holmes. But I believe we are simply dancing around the true question here."

[identity profile] faithandscience.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of whether, if you're not some distant relation to the other Sherlock Holmes who was previously a teacher here as well, you're some sort of alternate-universe counterpart?" William said. He truly missed the mentorship of the first Sherlock, but it would be foolhardy to just assume that this one would be anything like his modern counterpart.

"I believe I would hold claim on the 'original' in that context," Holmes replied dryly. "As, chronologically, I am the first."

"But the other one was unaware of the existence of any sort of predecessor, so far as I knew," William pointed out. "Which would seem to imply that you do not exist in the world he was from. In any case- you are a detective, then, as well?"

Re: Meet Your Teachers [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] onemoreproblem.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
His smile in response was sharp and fierce. "I am the detective, Mr. Murdoch."

William's answering grin was far more exuberant. "Then you may well be interested in a number of advancements in forensic science that have been made since our period in history."

"Finally catching up with proper science, are they?" Oh god, they would end up in the library and never leave.

"So it would seem, yes," William nodded. "And the computers! They've made quite a number of advancements on Babbage's engine."

"Well this right here," he said, pulling an iPhone from his jacket pocket, "is a phone- wireless- as well as being a computer. It can access any number of databases of information, instantaneously."

"I will need one of these," Holmes decided, turning it over in his hands. "And more suitable clothing if I wish to remain unnoticed."

"I could show you where one might procure such things," William offered. "Assuming, of course, one of your new coworkers hasn't already offered to do so."

"Coworkers." He sniffed. "Won't even show me how these washing machines work."

GOD, STEVE.

"Those are easy enough," William shared. "It wouldn't take too long for me to show you. Although I wouldn't recommend running any wool garments through them."
