301--3rd period

"So business and trust. I did a little experiment, a little practical application...and I have to tell you, I was pretty happy." She launches into the tale of how Lucas the record store guy earned her trust. She smiles and pulls out Stevie Ray Vaughn and plays it for the class during the discussion.

"So...we've done trust and business, and trust and S/M/R...how about trust as it relates to emotions?"
and that's a cold shot babe....

401--5th period

"I'm going to set you up and turn you loose. There is an inherent power that comes with trust. It's an insticntual bond between parent and child...in theory, and is less fragile than most people assume in an interpersonal relationship. I want you to either go to the library or get online and find evidence of a relationship where trust is either very stron OR has been broken, and investigate the power dynamic of the scenario."

She's kinda fidgetty...like she wants to get out of here, like now...

Boone really is fumbling for something to say. "Er, it kind of depends on the emotions of the individual, doesn't it?"

She blinks at him, a bemused grin on her lips, "Yeeees....aaaannnndddd...."

"And, um, have I mentioned that you're my favorite teacher?"

"Aww, who told you that sucking up works with me, Boone?" she says with a mischevious grin.

He looked around, before glancing around the room in search of someone to blame. "Uh, it could've been Maia? Or maybe just a guess I had..."

"Well, then Maia's brilliant, because I'm totally in to sucking up. Now, tel me more." Sitting on the edge of her desk, she arches her eyebrows and smirks as she fold her arms. "Come on Boone, impress me. Use pathos."

"Okay, pathos are specifically intended to get an emotional response from the reciever of the message. And then there's ones like it; most of them are in Latin. I looked some of this up the other day."

"If I'm remembering this correctly, there's 'apostrophe' where the speaker changes the reciever so that they can have a better emotional appeal. It's kind of like a little kid going from one parent to the other to get what they want, right?"

"And then there's descriptio, I think, and they use that to stir up the reciever by describing consequences; like a priest telling everyone they're going to get an STD, die and burn in hell if they have sex before they're married."

"And nothing says sucking up like actually doing the work. If everyone were like you, I'd hardly have to come to work. Thanks, Boone." She flashes him a brilliant smile and stops picking on him. Almost.

"Anything else?"

He grinned at the praise, then remembered a question he'd meant to ask her. "Well, I didn't really understand congeries, but I guess I could try looking it up or something..."

"No need. It's an effective tool for drawing upon a crowd. It's a piling up of terms, really. Like, um..." she thinks for a minute, then launches an impromptu speech, "In this day and ange, an age of fear, an age of terror, an age where our parents and children are not safe, in a time when our children can't play outdoors, when drugs and violence and crime are rampant; in this age we live in we need strength, we need courage, we need to call upon our core values to crush that fear, to crush that terror, to strike down those who would work against peace and happiness and harmony."

She smiles and rolls her eyes, "That wasn't the best example, but now that you know? You'll recognize it when you hear it. It really can work a crowd into a frenzy."

Boone was visibly impressed by her charismatic speech, and smiled. "Thanks! I understand now."
