Practical Mythology, 2/15/12, Period 2, [Class Session 7]

Hercules was wearing sunglasses and appeared to be nursing a hangover as the class filed into the classroom.

"Movie day," he announced, appearing to wince a bit as he spoke.

He hit play on a projector, and the movie began.

Hercules thought it was, if somewhat fabricated, a good choice for the class. He was just going to go crawl under his desk, now.

"Cassidy," Ender called quietly - as to not interrupt the movie - and nodded at her. "We're back."

Cassidy whipped her head around to him and gave him a relieved smile.

"I'm glad." Since she was sure Hercules wouldn't mind, she moved closer so that they could talk.

Ender smiled a little. "Did I miss anything?"

She shook her head, not sure how to explain how this week was making her feel.

"Thank you for the flowers, Ender. They were very lovely." She tilted her head. "Was the trip bad?"

"And thank you for yours," Ender said, the corners of his mouth curving up further.

Then they dropped. "We ran into some trouble, but we came out alive," he said. "Ben's a little banged up."

Cassidy lost some of her color at that.

"Alive is very good," she agreed. "Banged up? Has he talked to Karla? Or Shira could help, too."

Why yes, her first response is not Clinic but Karla.

"We managed to get him medical attention in time, but Karla's going to see if she can do anything more for him," Ender said, electing not to mention the scars.

Cassidy nodded. "Karla can do whatever needs to be done for him," she said with assurance.

She ran her eyes over him in concern. "Were you physically harmed?"

"No, I'm fine," Ender said, shaking his head. "A brush with an illusory sickness notwithstanding."

"Illusory sickness?"

"A clever one," Ender said, nodding. "One of the people on that planet weaved an illusion that... fed off belief, I suppose. The harder you believed that there was an illness, that you could catch it, and that it was terrible, the more it seemed to come true."

"That's awful."

"But very clever," Ender repeated. He looked towards the rest of the class, his eyes straying only briefly past the movie - he wasn't really interesting. "As soon as you figured out it was an illusion, though... the sickness vanished without a trace."

"That's a very frightening idea of attack," Cassidy said softly. "I don't think I've even heard of any Black Widow doing something like that."

"It's powerful," Ender said. "A great piece of psychological warfare. But as you can see, we figured it out eventually, and got out unscathed."

She nodded. "Something that I am very glad for, Ender."

Ender smiled at her. "But, all that is past," he said, "It's almost spring break. Are you going on the trip?"

Cassidy nodded. "It seems like fun and I'm wanting to go to more places than just Fandom and Kaeleer."

"We'll have to see about doing something together, then," Ender offered. "It's been a long time since I last was in Brazil."

Cassidy smiled. "I would like that, Ender." And she would, because she liked spending time with him and enjoyed their friendship.

"I thought perhaps I should do some research on where we are going."

"Look up the Brazilian carnival," Ender suggested. "It should be starting around when we get there."
