Practical Mythology, 2/1/12, Period 2, [Class Session 5]
Upon entering the Danger Shop today, the class found themselves in a dank, cavernous room with high stone walls that seemingly went forward... in a maze.
"Those of you who have taken classes from me before are familiar with this one," Hercules said with a grin. He had in each hand a ball of string, and several more lay at his feet. He started tossing them to the students, each student getting their own string.
"In Minos there was a great labyrinth, which was home to the mighty Minotaur. It was designed by a man named Daedylus, whom we will encounter next week. The labyrinth, not the Minotaur. He was the product of the Queen of Minos and the Cretan Bull, and you probably don't want to think of that one for too long. You can thank Aphrodite for that one, and to a certain degree Poseidon. The quick lesson there is if you make a deal with a god, it's best to honor it."
"Eventually, a hero named Theseus ventured into the labyrinth to slay the minotaur. Armed with a sword, and a ball of string given to him by Ariadne, the daughter of the King of Minos. The string allowed him to navigate the great maze, and he made it to the heart where he slay the Minotaur."
Hercules raised a finger. "For those wondering, the Minotaur was not just a misunderstood person who happened to be half-bull. He ate people. People were fed to him. That's pretty monstrous behavior." But then, Hercules smiled. "I'm about to jog ahead. Your task for the class is to make it to the center of this maze. There's no Minotaur, merely a maze. At the heart of the maze, there are doughnuts and coffee. And it's real stuff from Jeff's, not mere illusion. So... follow on!"
He took off at a run, as he knew the way. Others may find it trickier to follow...
