So You're a Fugitive From Justice, Tuesday, 3rd Period
Zayne's class was taking place in the Danger Shop this week. It was programmed to look, sound, and even smell like a vile hive of scum and villainy... Well, maybe not EXACTLY like that since Zayne had never been to Tatooine. But it was clearly a place where lowlifes spent time.
Congratulations, lowlifes!
"Today we'll be learning how to lay low," Zayne said. "There are a few ways to do this. The most obvious and easiest way is to find a quiet place where you can stay, be it an apartment, a hotel, maybe an abandoned warehouse, or even in the back of whatever kind of vehicle you have. If you have the money, you can even rent a place so that you don't have to feel guilty about staying somewhere without paying. If you're going to go that route, I suggest fake names or a trusted source that can get you the place. Keep in mind, though, that if anyone outside of your crew knows who you are and where you're staying, it might be tempting to turn you in."
"But sitting in a quiet place and hoping nobody finds you or squeals is easy. The only additional thing to know about it is when to leave, because any place you stay is going to get figured out eventually, even if it takes days, weeks, or years. That time is usually when you get too comfortable or when you know something's coming through whatever sources you may have."
"But like I said, not a significant challenge. A real challenge is trying to lay low in public. And that's why we're here in this fake cantina. There are a few ways to go about this," Zayne explained. "First, you could just be enough of a threat to make sure nobody's going to turn you in, even if they recognize you. It's probably not the safest play, but it can be one worth trying if you have a big enough reputation."
"For the rest of us, it's a matter of trying to fit in. The easiest way to do this is look the part and act like you're supposed to be there. I'll admit, it was easier in my galaxy where we have various aliens whose forms you can kind of fake with good costuming, and things like helmets and hoods are pretty typical outfits. But that's okay, we can make due."
"The main thing you want aside from clothes that don't call attention to yourself - so if you're in a tough bar, pastels may not be the way to go. You'll probably be looking for something a little darker in color. And then this may be a little counter intuitive, but if you can, decorate your face with something that does stand out," Zayne said. "The key is to make sure it's fake or removable. So a piercing, a scar, tattoos, colored contacts, or even just facial hair or glasses. The goal is to draw attention to one specific detail so that the focus is less on the rest of your face. Going that route also has the side benefit of making giving a description of you a little harder. If somebody tries to draw a composite sketch or something, then that detail will feature prominently. But once you're gone, so is that feature."
"I'm not saying you have to go crazy with it. While I was being chased by the Republic's forces, I spent a few days working in a mess ship - a food ship - for the Republic Navy. The only thing that separated me from being recognized as a wanted criminal were 1) a hat and goggle combination that I had to wear whenever I was in public, 2) the idea that nobody thought someone would be crazy enough to stick around with people trying to catch him, and 3) well, the fact that there was a war going on and they were slightly preoccupied. And if I could do that with goggles, you can do that with glasses."
"As for acting like you're supposed to be there, there's not much to explain. Don't pick fights, try not to act suspiciously. This is easier said than done, naturally. After all, you're in a room full of people who might recognize you."
"So, for today, we have some shop-created disguises for you to put together including clothes, fake piercings, even prominent fake scars. Half of you will start the class by pick your disguises, getting into the crowd, and then trying to keep your non-disguised classmates from finding you in plain sight. Halfway through class, we'll change it up."
"Oh, one last tip that you're not going to be able to get away with today? If you're cornered in a tough bar and need to make an escape, start a bar fight and let the chaos be your cover. It's a solid move."
