Everyday Skills, Friday 2nd Period

Oz's class was once again in the Danger Shop, and he looked mighty pleased with himself today. The Shop resembled a labspace, with opaque drapes covering the equipment on the benches. He also had a cannon by his desk that might have looked awfully familiar to Peter certain members of the class.

"One highly underrated skill that's even more vital in today's age of ubiquitous advertising is the ability to balance an open mind with a healthy degree of skepticism. Not believing everything you're told, but being willing to search for the kernel of truth that may or may not be there." Anyone who'd listened to radio over the weekend could probably guess where this was heading. "And the best was to uncover this truth is through experimentation, repeated experimentation. With partners, so get ready to find one."

He pressed a remote control, and the drapes vanished to reveal bags and cans of glitter in every size and colour that could fit on the benches, some of which were marked 'edible'. "Your job today will be to apply glitter to your classmates, working your way through the supplies, and see what happens. For science." For something all right.

"Of course, every experiment needs a control group, which in this case is myself and Peter here. We'll be supervising." This reprieve wasn't just Oz being kind, it was also that certain activities weren't as much fun when you already knew what would happen. He patted the MythGlitzerGun. "Anyone who tries invalidate the experiment by contaminating the control to gets to make friends with Betsy here."

See, but Britta liked to think she had an excellent BS detector. It was pretty good, but, really, she just sort of assumed everything was BS anyway.

"And what if I pointed out that today is Friday and I've basically been wanting to party since I woke up this morning?"

Because it was. And she had. Friday, people.

"I could point that out too," Rebecca said, smirking. "But that's not an easy way to get our work done before the end of the class period."

Britta grunted, but there was a laugh in it. "Okay, that's fair enough," she allowed, rolling her eyes over a smirk. "If getting the work done before the end of the class period's important."

"Isn't it?"

"Is it?" asked Britta. "if we don't do anything, if we don't sit here and slather each other in glitter, which, by the way, sounds a little bit inappropriate for the classroom, don't you think, what's going to happen to us, I mean, really? Is he going to hold us after class and be all, 'Alright, you two, you didn't experiment enough for the wide margins of my weird assignment, so you have to stay behind and bang erasers?' Or maybe he'll try to shoot us with that cannon or whatever that is, which seems like an endangerment to the students."

"Then the best thing to do," Rebecca concluded, "sounds like it would be to duck out early and get a head start on the weekend, doesn't it?"

"See, now you're speaking my language!" said Britta, but the smirk on her face was short-lived.

"Oh, crap, I still got Leadership and club fair today, though. I mean, Leadership, who cares, right, but I can't just leave Jim hanging for the fair."

Mostly because Jim was cute.

Rebecca made a face. "Ugh, I should go to that too," she said, sounding so thrilled about that, really. "Tomorrow maybe because my mun made stupid plans for tonight already?"

"Tomorrow should be good," Britta said, grinning at Rebecca's clear enthusiasm for the club fair. "Think we can try to scrounge up some life out of this place, or hit up good stuff off island?"

"Oh, off-island, for sure," Rebecca said, waving a hand. "Hmm. Baltimore's lame... maybe New York?"

"No complaints here," Britta said. "Spent my first weekend over here up there, and I've been meaning to get back. Man. Makes the whole stuck in boarding school for probation thing so worth it."

Hang on, wait, what?

"...probation?"

"Well, yeah," said Britta, ready to retract all the cool points Rebecca had just earned. "I mean, you don't think I'd actually be here if they weren't making me, do you?"

Rebecca gave this some thought. So on the one hand, this girl clearly thought she was a badass, what with the whole... legal probation thing. But on the other hand, she was the first person she'd met here who had shown any interest in partying so far. So.

"Guess not," she said. "Saturday?"

"Saturday," Britta confirmed with a nod, and then had to grin. She didn't know what effects of glitter they were supposed to discover, but this was a pretty damn good one, if you asked her.
