Everyday Skills, Friday 2nd Period

Oz's class was once again in the Danger Shop, and he looked mighty pleased with himself today. The Shop resembled a labspace, with opaque drapes covering the equipment on the benches. He also had a cannon by his desk that might have looked awfully familiar to Peter certain members of the class.

"One highly underrated skill that's even more vital in today's age of ubiquitous advertising is the ability to balance an open mind with a healthy degree of skepticism. Not believing everything you're told, but being willing to search for the kernel of truth that may or may not be there." Anyone who'd listened to radio over the weekend could probably guess where this was heading. "And the best was to uncover this truth is through experimentation, repeated experimentation. With partners, so get ready to find one."

He pressed a remote control, and the drapes vanished to reveal bags and cans of glitter in every size and colour that could fit on the benches, some of which were marked 'edible'. "Your job today will be to apply glitter to your classmates, working your way through the supplies, and see what happens. For science." For something all right.

"Of course, every experiment needs a control group, which in this case is myself and Peter here. We'll be supervising." This reprieve wasn't just Oz being kind, it was also that certain activities weren't as much fun when you already knew what would happen. He patted the MythGlitzerGun. "Anyone who tries invalidate the experiment by contaminating the control to gets to make friends with Betsy here."

"... And on that cheerful thought." He was going to pick up and offer her a can of glitter. Glitter was safer than bombs. That was just good sense.

"I don't think I want to know what he's expecting us to get out of this."

"He says it's an experiment," Juliet reminded him, and frowned as she turned the can in her hands to examine the label. There was something about glitter somebody had told her, and --

"Oh! He wants to see if anybody ends up making out!"

She looked very proud of herself for remembering that.

"Oh." All the years Chuck had been here, he probably should've heard that particular rumor before now. "That seems... unteacherly."

And also unlikely. It wasn't a reaction he'd had to glitter before.

Juliet crinkled her nose. "The guy calls himself Oz," she pointed out, as if that ruled him out as a serious teacher to start with.

Then: "... no offense, but I don't really want to make out with anybody here. Not because of glitter, anyhow. Do you?"

"Uh, no. No." No he did not. For some reason, he felt a need to elaborate on that. "Not that you, and other people, aren't great. You are, but-- Awkward. I'd think."

"Also, I should say, I have been in the vicinity of glitter, and somehow never had that problem before."

"It's okay," Juliet said. "I mean, you're great too, but --- right. Awkward."

She shrugged, considered the glitter in her hand again. "Maybe this is a different kind of glitter?"

"Maybe." Chuck was eying it with a distinct amount more apprehension, starting now.

"Or it depends on the color? Or if it's... edible or not?" he suggested. Until today, he hadn't known glitter even came in 'edible'. "... Mostly it just looks like it would be itchy, and make me feel like a glitter ball. I don't think either of those would suit me."
