Mathematics: all classes: 1. period

Today's breakfast is pizza and pop and coffee.

Charlie is still working on his equations because the mun needs more sunlight, damnit.

Beginners
Do this exercise.

Intermediates
A rectangular sheet of paper is folded so that two diagonally opposite corners come together. If the crease formed is the same length as the longer side of the sheet, what is the ratio of the longer side of the sheet to the shorter side?

Advanced
Study String Theory.

Angela signs in and takes some coffee. She makes a face at the pizza. It's too early for tomato sauce.

Pippi selects "C" as her answer to the first question.

This is one of those vaguely abstract problems she wasn't every good at. In real life, she'd just make or buy more pizza so everybody could have as much as they wanted...

She pretty sure that it's either "A" or "E" but she can't decide... The lower half of the paper she turns in is covered with the letters "A" and "E" which are circled, or stared, and then slashed, crossed out, or poorly erased. As if she went A... No E... No, E is wrong, it's A... Or is it E? Maybe it is A... But what it's E? And so on.

It is difficult to discern what her final answer is in all this.

Angela signs in and draws a complete mental blank at the problem. Apparently, she really did skip geometry too often in tenth grade.

She guesses "The longer side is twice the lenght of the shorter one" and turns the paper in.

Chloe gets out a spare piece of paper, folding it a few times in confusion. She can't figure out how the crease can be the same length as either side, but it doesn't look like a trick question...in the end, she just writes "The longer side is only slightly bigger than the shorter side?"

Walter seems distracted, apparently looking for someone who isn't there.

However, he spends the entire class period referring to his book and eventually turns in this (http://www.qbyte.org/puzzles/p001s.html) answer.

Sometimes being pigheaded pays off.

John tries to figure this out mathmatically, but if it doesn't involve trajectories, he has a bit of trouble. He applies the quadratic and ends up with an answer that's fairly close.

Susan sits up the back of the class, slumped over her work. Somehow, this whole string theory thing makes a whole lot more sense when she's channelling Grandad.
