Period 1: 08 - 08:50AM || Celtic Studies

When the students make their way into class, they find Phoebe perched on the edge of Camulus' desk, swinging her legs back and forth. There's something much different about her, a mixture of hardness and sadness flowing through her, and her eyes are masked. On the black board behind her is written "NOT ALL TRIANGLES ARE FORMED ON PURPOSE OR EASILY BROKEN" in dark red chalk. Once everyone is in their seats, Phoebe looks at each one in turn...well almost each one.

"Professor Camulus has been detained by other responsibilities, so, I'll be teaching the class today. Now, you've been learning about the Celtic Languages and where they originated. Camulus has decreed that that means you will be having a quiz in Gaidhlig on Monday. Translating simple sentences and the polite phrases from Gaidhlig to English."

She stands up and starts passing out handouts to everyone in the class. "Today, we're going to be discussing different Celtic Fairy Tales and Myths. However, these won't just be any kind of myth. These are all going to have a theme in common. That theme? Acts and sacrifices committed in the rashness of strong emotions like anger, love, hate and passion and the repercussions they can have."

After making sure every student had a handout, she returns to the front of the classroom. "First, we have The Story of Deirdre and Naois. Keep in mind while reading this that not all reasons for doing things may fit your definition of logic or intelligence. After discussing this, I'd like everyone to think of times in their lives that they have seen someone make a stupid or rash decision in a high emotion. I give you the choice of either discussing it with the class or writing a 200-word essay to be turned in to me by the end of class."

Lyta signs in, giving Phoebe a scrutinizing look as she sees the red words on the board. She settles into her seat with a furrowed brow. She's not sure what's wrong, but she definitely knows something is out of place.

Bel kept silent, but gave Phoebe a dark look.

Macbeth got to the name "Malcolm" before he found himself somewhat turned off by the story.
Not for any reason on particular, of course.
So he kept pretty quiet during the discussion.

"I'll share something," Bel said crankily. "I know someone who signed a stupid contract, not even understanding what it was, and isn't even trying to get out of it. Now that's rash and stupid."

"The person flat out told me she was going to honor the contract," Bel snapped. "She intends to go through with it, so I guess she's okay with it. From all I've heard, she's awfully cozy with the person she signed the contract with."

Lyta looks pointedly to Bel and Phoebe, effectively reading the undercurrent of the discussion. "There was an ambassador I knew," she began slowly, choosing her words carefully, "born of a high ranking family. Shadows lurked behind an effective facade of honorability and, in the grand scheme, he really wasn't a bad person. He was ambitious, and time after time that proved to be his short coming.

"He was so keen on seeking his future -- on getting the advice of a seer -- that he wormed his way into her path, eventually earned his fortune from her through persistence and irritation. She told him that, one day, he would be emperor. And that one day, his closest confidant and assistant would be as well.

"From that day, the ambassador continually sought a way to avoid being emperor. While being ambitious, he also knew his limitations, knew he had been tainted by the shadows lurking. The seer had given him specific tasks he would accomplish on his ascention to the throne.

"Despite his best efforts, he accomplished most of the tasks, leading a life of growth and tragedy. He became an enlightened statesman, was a charter member of an enduring diplomatic alliance; he became the enlightened statesman of legend. But he also lost the love of his life, was led astray by Mordred Morden an operative and mistakenly killed a rival. In the end, the closest friend he had was the enemy he finally earned respect for and of; his lands burned with the rage of retribution, and he was a captive on his own throne."

Here, Lyta paused, her eyes drifting down to the pen she tinkered with in her hands. "Just like in the story, by learning his future -- by trying to escape his fate -- the ambassador plunged headfirst into what awaited." She smirked.

[Okay, so the smirk should have been deleted. She didn't smirk. She was deadly serious.]

"It was for him." Lyta gave a rueful smile, remembering the way Londo had been early in her visits to Babylon 5. She was glad she had heard the story only through a friend of a friend of a friend; she wasn't sure she could have borne watching it. Her own story was bad enough.

Lyta, books in arms, approached Phoebe. "Look, I don't want to pry, but... are you okay? Things seemed to get a little personal."
