Shop Class, Wednesday Morning

Sam was sitting on the desk when everyone arrived. The classroom had already been set to resemble a kitchen and a pile of fresh groceries was sitting on one of the counters.

"Morning, guys. Mac's not here, so you get stuck with me for the day. Unfortunately, I can't really do much because of the stupid snow monsters, so I had to improvise. We've done a lot this semester about using science and ingenuity to get ourselves out of dangerous or hazardous situations, but they can be used other places, too."

She gestured to the kitchen and the food, smiling.

"Your assignment for the day, should you choose to accept it, is to make yourself breakfast. The twist? There has to be something about either the food or the way you cook it that is creative in the way of our esteemed, if absent, leader."

"Have fun, and the fire extinguisher's in the corner if you need it."

Sam tried not to drool over the shiny, shiny weapon. "Mac gave you the go ahead to do this? He's not really a gun guy."

"Well, it's only a Nerf gun. I suppose you can modify it to shoot darts or stakes or something, but the main goal is to shoot harmless foam projectiles. It's some harmless fun. I'd like to get teams together, do a lazer tag deal with this stuff. Less messy and cheaper than paintball." John makes a mental note to make one for Carter.

Sam nodded. "Nerf is perfectly acceptable, as far as I know. Maybe if you soaked the Nerf in paint? Otherwise you wouldn't know you'd been hit."

"That's a possibility. Tried doing a flaming Nerf dart during the Snowman weekend, but that worked out a little less than I thought it would. Didn't work at all."

John stands there for a second, trying to figure out how to incorporate a paint delivery system inside the dart.

"See, now I would have loved to try a flaming Nerf dart," Sam said, unable to believe that sentence had just come out of her mouth. "What'd you use as an accelerant?"

"You could cut a slit in the dart, then insert a gelatin capsule of paint," she said idly as she fiddled with the UV mechanism. "It'd be a lot of work, but I think it should get the job done."

"Some of the hot oil from one of the other kids. Didn't necessarily work out the way I was hoping. Couldn't get it lit, and just ended up pouring hot oil all over the gun. Modified Crossbow."

"Paint reservoir would work. Or coat the tip in UV paint, or just remove the rubber sucker part and daub something on it. Hrm... I don't think Nerf and paintball have the same caliber, and I'm trying to make this as non-cleanup as possible."

He stood, thinking of his project for a second, tilting his head this way and that. His eyes focus on Sam's...thing. THE PROJECT!

"So what're you working on?"

"Sun lamp," Sam said, quickly. "I was feeling kind of pasty and wanted a tan."

John looks at the item, looks at Sam, and looks at the item again. "Battery powerd sunlamp? My dear militaristic friend, I don't buy that."

"Frankly? It's none of your business and I can't tell you about it." She shrugged. "Sorry."

"Well, if you need any help or someone to bounce ideas with your sungun, you know where to find me."

He looks over at his pile of PVC. "I'll make ya one o' these, if you're interested."

"I do," Sam nodded. "And thanks, but I think I'm good for now. It's not like I'm going to be up and around for a while yet anyway," she said, gesturing towards the crutches. "Stupid sharks."

"That's why it's a snipey rifey. Don't need to move much if you can shoot accurately at distance. Well, once you're more mobile, if you want one, give me a buzz."
