Shop Class, Wednesday Morning

Sam was sitting on the desk when everyone arrived. The classroom had already been set to resemble a kitchen and a pile of fresh groceries was sitting on one of the counters.

"Morning, guys. Mac's not here, so you get stuck with me for the day. Unfortunately, I can't really do much because of the stupid snow monsters, so I had to improvise. We've done a lot this semester about using science and ingenuity to get ourselves out of dangerous or hazardous situations, but they can be used other places, too."

She gestured to the kitchen and the food, smiling.

"Your assignment for the day, should you choose to accept it, is to make yourself breakfast. The twist? There has to be something about either the food or the way you cook it that is creative in the way of our esteemed, if absent, leader."

"Have fun, and the fire extinguisher's in the corner if you need it."

Xander looked sadly at the charred, blackened corpse of his banana wheat pancakes, then also stared longingly at John's arms brownies.

John eats another brownie and offers one to Xander.

"I got lots," John says. "Want a sugar rush?"

"I would love you until it wears off forever," Xander said, reaching happily for it. "I'd trade you, but the pancakes... are kind of welded to the pan. Which I guess is handy and mechanic-like, but not so tasty. You're welcome to my banana, though, if you want it, since I never quite got to use it." He held out the unpeeled, unsliced fruit.

Sam leaned over to investigate the pan, oblivious to subtext. "Wow. I think you've come up with a new adhesive there, Xander. Good work."

Xander glanced forlornly at it. "I'd try to patent it, but I don't think I could actually get it off the pan to send in a sample."

"Yeah, I don't think regular dish soap and a scrubby is going to take care of that."

"Well, I would love you too but that might be weird," John says, grinning. He eyes the banana before taking it. "I've haven't tried a banana in a long time. Guess you never really forget how to eat a banana though, right?"

Xander nods. "It's like riding a biker. Just unwrap and enjoy."
