Creature Languages, 1/30, Period 3

"Good morning. I was very pleased with your work on the quiz on Friday. While Dragon and Spider are unique languages, your quick grasp of them as a class shows your facility with Creature tongues in general.

I hope you will keep that about you as we move into a discussion of mammal languages. Today, we will start with an overview of what a mammal is."

Dream continues to lecture on mammal physiology and culture for about half of class.

"As humans are also mammals, all human languages also belong to the mammal family. That means that many pieces of nonverbal communication and the thought processes behind your languages will be shared with that of a chipmunk or dolphin. The rest of it is only pronunciation and grammar.

During class, think about one kind of mammal you would like to communicate with, then write that down and pass it in. This will help me choose guests for our next few weeks of class."

Victor passed a note to Walter:

Hey, I was thinking about making hot dogs on Wednesday. Do you think we can trust people around here with them?

Re: Creature, 1/30 -- Class

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-01-30 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Walter looked at the note and frowned. Hot dogs?

Are those like the hut dugs that the chef serves?

Re: Creature, 1/30 -- Class

[identity profile] anole-x.livejournal.com 2006-01-30 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, except with American spelling. I'm worried that in this place, people will use them for swordfighting (which is a euphamism, by the way) instead of eating them. Maybe I should go with hamburgers instead? I'm not good at grilling, though.

Re: Creature, 1/30 -- Class

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-01-30 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you have to worry too much about the swordfighting. People have enough euphemistic swords. I'll leave the American food to you. I'm making the stew with the name that makes you laugh.

Victor blushed a little, then passed a note back.

Okay. I'll see you at lunch?

Walter stuck the note in his pocket and kicked the back of Victor's chair to give him a nod and a wink.

Pippi's eyes just might start to glaze over a bit during the discussion about what makes a mammal; but she snaps out of it eventually.

Probably around the time the word "platypus" is mentioned.

Re: Creature, 1/30 -- Who?

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-01-30 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't think hellhounds are mammals - they definitely aren't warm blooded - but dogs might be close."

Re: Creature, 1/30 -- Who?

[identity profile] anole-x.livejournal.com 2006-01-30 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
After a while of thinking, Victor finally wrote down:

"I'd like to learn how to talk with a ferret or a rat. They're both really cool."

Re: Creature, 1/30 -- Who?

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2006-01-30 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Mr. Neilson would be happy to assist if you do a bit on Monkeys. I'm not sure how Old Man would feel about assisting with horse... He's rather the strong silent type. I suspect he has a fear of public speaking.

A little bit on cat might be nice for those of us who didn't take it last semester.

But since body language is so important I would like to see some more interesting body types in class. Like giraffe or platypus.

Mr. Neilson tugs on Pippi's braid.

"Ow! Yes Mr. Neilson, I mentioned you'd like to help with monkey."

I already do pretty well with cats...how about something common, like a squirrel? Or a rat, so we can tell them to stop gnawing on your stuff without setting out little inhumane traps.

Re: Creature, 1/30 -- Who?

[identity profile] the4thsister.livejournal.com 2006-01-30 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Paige considers the question a while and Pippi's mention of Mr Nelson thinks maybe learning monkey would be cool.

"Monkey might be interesting, since they're so closely related to human and it's a widely know fact that they can learn sign language and stuff to communicate with humans right so why not learn it the other way round?"

A giraffe would be cool, and there's Earl, Professor Logan's miniature one. Or we could learn marmoset so we can talk with whoever Professor Skeeter turns into one next.

Xander thinks for a moment, then writes down, "Rat-language could actually be pretty helpful - I have a friend from back home who turned herself into one and still hasn't managed to get human again. My friend Willow's taking care of her, and she seems pretty comfy -- she hasn't tried to torch her cage or anything - but I'm sure she'd rather be a girl type person if she had a choice about it."

Re: Creature, 1/30 -- Who?

[identity profile] sakuracchyan.livejournal.com 2006-01-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sakura has to think about this for a minute. What kind of animal would she want to talk to? She gnaws on the end of her pencil, then scribbles on a sheet of notebook paper.

I think that it would be interesting to speak with a Fox, since they are always so attibuted with trickery. I wonder what they think of our image of them?

Vala is sitting more stiffly than usual and has the cast on her left hand propped on her knee. Luckily she can still write:

"Wolf. 'Cuz my boyfriend turned into one last semester from a rabid hamster bite and he was all cute and adorable, but I couldn't exactly talk to him.
