"Good morning. I was very pleased with your work on the quiz on Friday. While Dragon and Spider are unique languages, your quick grasp of them as a class shows your facility with Creature tongues in general.

I hope you will keep that about you as we move into a discussion of mammal languages. Today, we will start with an overview of what a mammal is."

Dream continues to lecture on mammal physiology and culture for about half of class.

"As humans are also mammals, all human languages also belong to the mammal family. That means that many pieces of nonverbal communication and the thought processes behind your languages will be shared with that of a chipmunk or dolphin. The rest of it is only pronunciation and grammar.

During class, think about one kind of mammal you would like to communicate with, then write that down and pass it in. This will help me choose guests for our next few weeks of class."

Pippi's eyes just might start to glaze over a bit during the discussion about what makes a mammal; but she snaps out of it eventually.

Mr. Neilson would be happy to assist if you do a bit on Monkeys. I'm not sure how Old Man would feel about assisting with horse... He's rather the strong silent type. I suspect he has a fear of public speaking.

A little bit on cat might be nice for those of us who didn't take it last semester.

But since body language is so important I would like to see some more interesting body types in class. Like giraffe or platypus.

Yeah, except with American spelling. I'm worried that in this place, people will use them for swordfighting (which is a euphamism, by the way) instead of eating them. Maybe I should go with hamburgers instead? I'm not good at grilling, though.

I don't think you have to worry too much about the swordfighting. People have enough euphemistic swords. I'll leave the American food to you. I'm making the stew with the name that makes you laugh.

I already do pretty well with cats...how about something common, like a squirrel? Or a rat, so we can tell them to stop gnawing on your stuff without setting out little inhumane traps.

Paige considers the question a while and Pippi's mention of Mr Nelson thinks maybe learning monkey would be cool.

"Monkey might be interesting, since they're so closely related to human and it's a widely know fact that they can learn sign language and stuff to communicate with humans right so why not learn it the other way round?"

Xander thinks for a moment, then writes down, "Rat-language could actually be pretty helpful - I have a friend from back home who turned herself into one and still hasn't managed to get human again. My friend Willow's taking care of her, and she seems pretty comfy -- she hasn't tried to torch her cage or anything - but I'm sure she'd rather be a girl type person if she had a choice about it."

Sakura has to think about this for a minute. What kind of animal would she want to talk to? She gnaws on the end of her pencil, then scribbles on a sheet of notebook paper.

I think that it would be interesting to speak with a Fox, since they are always so attibuted with trickery. I wonder what they think of our image of them?
