Professor Chaucer's Office Hours, Monday

Chaucer is holding office hours, and this time he actually seems to be enjoying it. He's reading, but looks perfectly happy to be interrupted. And his door is open.


[Chaucer will be in his office all day, except for 5th and 6th period when he's in class. Mun is slowplaying until evening.]

Just before class, Isabel stopped by Professor Chaucer's office holding a small insulated cup in one hand a much larger one in the other. She stopped in the doorway and knocked.

"Isabel!" Geoff says cheerfully. "Come in. What can I do for you this afternoon?"

Isabel smiled back. "Nothing actually. I just wanted to drop this off." She placed the small cup on his desk. "One espresso, just for you."

Geoff grins. "Thank you very much, my lady. How are things going for you? Settling into the new school environment all right?"

Isabel might have blushed a bit at the term 'my lady'. "Things are going well. One or two bumps, but overall things are fine." She laughed a bit, "I'm actually having a lot more fun at school then I thought I would."

"I can understand that feeling. I'm having a lot more fun teaching than I thought I would." Another grin, and then Geoff takes a sip of the coffee.

"Anything I can help with? As far as the bumps are concerned, I mean. And by the way, I hope you'll be going to the Humanities dinner tomorrow."

"This seems to be a fun place. Although sometimes what's defined as fun might seem a bit strange." She smiled again, "But yes, I will be at the dinner."

Her smile slipped for a minute when she continued, "Thanks for the offer, but there's really nothing anyone can do. My friends were hurt when we were attacked by a vampire last week. Fortunately everyone will be okay. It was just a bit scary."

"A vampire?" His expression becomes serious. "I'm very sorry to hear that. No, I probably wouldn't be much help against vampires. But if there's ever anything more...mundane that I can help with, I hope you'll let me know. Are you all right?"

"I'm fine. Really. She never even touched me. But I do appreciate the offer. Thank you." She started to back out the door, "And now I'd better get to class. I wouldn't want to be late," she said with a smile.

Paige is there during 3rd period, she looks happy enough.

"I came about the Valentine's idea, wanted to make sure there wasn't anything you thought I should know before I start organising it."

"You look well, Paige. Come on in." Geoff gestures toward the chair. "I can't imagine there's anything you'd need to know that you already don't... Um, I'd need any specifics they might want for the poems -- theme, name or description of the recipient if they want it incorporated, any particular details they might want used. Or anything they don't want, like with Tonks's request that her commissions not be too romantic or sappy."

She smiles and sits down, "I was thinking maybe we should put some of warning on the posters personally, we don't want anyone using your poetry irresponsibly do we? It is pretty powerful" she jokes.

She nods to what he's saying okay cool, well I guess I'll be about to take the commissions some of the time anyway and I know what you need to work with, I wasn't sure if maybe you'd be too busy teaching to do this, but I figured receiving poetry on Valentine's Day from Geoffrey Chaucer was an opportunity most people wouldn't want to pass up."

"Well, thank you, Paige. Although I think it would be best if they wrote their own poems, I'm certainly not going to pass up a commission or two if they come along. And I think I can fit in a little writing between classes."

He chuckles. "Put your name on the posters if you want, so people can bring their commissions to you directly. And you can drop them by here, or leave them for me at the shop."

"Wow you've really taken to being a teacher haven't you? I figured you'd be happy to make money as an author, it is what you are."

"And yeah I'll do that, I'm generally about," she waves her hands around, "somewhere!"

Geoff laughs. "I was only joking, Paige. I still spend most of my time when I'm not preparing for class writing. And I really do think this was a good idea of yours, for the Valentine's Day poems."

Still grinning, he adds, "I'm generally in my office all day on Monday and Tuesday, but you probably already know that. And actually, since you and Inara have been taking care of the shop, I've been spending a little extra time here, just for a quiet place to work. And I do appreciate that, by the way. The job you're doing minding the shop."

Paige blushes slightly, "Oh right of course sorry and I'm glad you liked the idea I thought it made sense nothing says Valentine's Day like poetry."

"And as for looking after the shop, well I need the money to be honest and I like it there, it's interesting."

(( and lj still won't let me log in and post on this computer after nearly a week, how fun! *takes out a contract on LJ*))

"I'm glad you find it interesting. I know it can get a little lonely there sometimes, when there aren't any customers. If you're ever there and things get too quiet, just close up and go home, all right? Better that than drive yourself crazy starting at an empty room. And don't forget, you can take commissions, or put up examples, of your own work as well."

Fourth Period

Ten wanders in with coffee. He has a very nasty (but healing) cut across the left side--his left--of his face.

When he looks at Geoff's couch, he smirks. Just a little. And then he flops into a chair.

"Don't tell me you missed the snowDaleks shooting ice bullets." Ten langorously hands a coffee to Geoff.

Geoff takes the cup of coffee. "I was stuck here at the school all weekend. Spent the whole time at House's apartment off the clinic."

He sips at the coffee. "What's a snowDalek?"

The mention of House leads Ten to raise his own eyebrow (the right one...left side hurts) and smirk a little. It wipes off at the mention of Dalek anything. "Don't ask. There were snow monsters. Bad. Lots of people hurt worse than this...you didn't notice?! What WERE you and the other good doctor up to?"

Smirk.

Geoff's been noticing the smirks, and gives one right back. "Drinking, Scrabble...piano lessons." He shrugs, taking another drink of coffee. "Oh, did you know they make voice recordings of books and poetry? Sometimes even with the author's own voice. I'm going in to the mainland sometime and check the bookstore there to see what they have. Maybe I'll bring some back for my class."

"Scrabble, is that what they call it now?" Ten slurps his coffee. "And books on tape...well...CD and MP3 are far more popular in this era, thank god, analog recordings break down too much over time..." He looks as if he's going to ramble on for a while about it. "Sometimes they do it with a full cast of people, too. All kinds of books. For busy people or those who have trouble with their eyesight. Great development, really, only in the last forty years or so."

He ignores the remark about Scrabble, because he's off on an idea that's caught hold of him. "I want my class to be able to hear the words. Read by the author, if I can find them. But that's something we've been talking about in class -- CJ came and lectured on it last week. The idea that the spoken word can convey deeper or alternate meanings, depending on the speaker's intent."

He's leaned forward while he was talking, eyes wide with excitement. "House promised to drive me over when he gets his bike. Hopefully this week, so I can have something for class next week. Do have any suggestions?"
