Driver's Ed, Jan 25th (7th period)

The Danger Shop is once again set up to look like a standard classroom. Once it's time for class to start, Tommy begins the lecture:

"In order to fully understand the vehicle you're going to be driving, I think it's important to understand how it works." Tommy says, and then delivers a lecture on automobile combustion engines.

"Any questions?" He asks. "Next week, we'll be discussing rules of the road, and the week after that, we'll start doing *real* simulations. I trust that's the part everyone's been looking forward to?" he asks the class with a wink. "Your homework is to look over the Virginia Driver's Manual in preparation for next week."

Duo listens to the lecture topic and his eyes go wide and he grins. "Oooooh, internal combustion engines! Right on!" He says. "Do we get to build them, too?"

Archie might be a little bit alarmed by Duo's enthusiasm over the engines, but he hopes it doesn't show.

Duo naively takes Archie's look for one of excitement and grins at him and claps him on the back. "Sweet, right? I still think it needs jet fuel, though..."

Archie just stares at Duo. "What's jet fuel?"

Duo raises an eyebrow. "Jet fuel? You know, the powerful stuff they use to run big ass pieces of machinery, like jets. Not the rag-tag stuff they use to run little things like a car."

Archie smiles, embarrassed. "As I've only recently found out, where I'm from we have yet to discover the steam engine."

"Ohhh." Duo nods. "I getcha. My roomie's from a time like, that, too." He gives Archie a reassuring grin. "Then let's just get ya started on this car engine, then, huh? I'll save my jet obsession for next semester."

"I think that's reasonable." Archie smiles and scans his notes again, resolving to head down to the library and read up a little bit on engines tomorrow.

Now Ivanova did faceplant on the desk. "No. No building of anything. Even out of scrap. Especially out of scrap. Shop is killing me already."

Duo laughs. "Aw. I live for scrap heaps! Ah, things not go as planned with the 'make somethin' for someone to use' in shop today?" He thinks. "I guess you're right, though, inna class where you're supposed to be learnin' how to use the damn thing, it's probably not such a good idea to be muckin' around with the engine."

She gave him a bit of an evil eye from her position on the desk, although if she could point it at an internal combustion engine, she could. "I don't like engines. I never have." She relented. "Okay. So Garibaldi's motorcycle was kind of cool. But it didn't really run on internal combustion, because most of the engine got swapped out with a powercell. So I return to my original statement."

Duo's interest has been piqued. "Powercell, huh? That's cool! My Gundam's got somethin' like that, but also plenty of engines for other stuff, too. He make the cycle from scratch, or just swap out the engine as a modification?"

"He did build it from scratch. He was squirreling away parts for years before he actually built the thing. And he would have built the original engine, but Lennier - a Minbari, very Zen and environmentally conscious - was helping him and put the powercell in instead."
