Advanced Criminal Justice, Class #5, Period 1, 01.24.06

[OOC: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bridge_carson for the random inspiration for this class. Low-impact and character-rich? Woo. Class Info Post.]

The Tick was sitting at his desk looking slightly tired. Lockheed wasn't in class today. It was probably going to be an easy discussion.

"Hello, class! Lockheed is not with us today. He had something else to take care of. Today, we're taking a slight detour in our discussion. Today, we're talking about your experiences."

"I know that we have a lot of people from different cultures here, so I thought it would be keen to talk a little about Justice in your original environment! Please share some information with the class about a Justice organization from your home. It can be a superhero team, the military police, your local sheriff's department, or even the occasional lone individual who tries to write the wrongs in the world. As long as they are for justice and, I suppose, according to my earlier statement, are organized, share that bit of you with us!"

"Your metaphor of the week is the shift key on a keyboard."

"For extra credit that is actually related to the lecture for once, please name your favorite Defender of Justice from your home!"

Metaphor

Justice is the shift key of Society, keeping the words of Truth, Freedom and Law properly capitalised, yet still ensuring that they are not stridently capslocked!

EC

My favourite Defender of Justice from my home is Hercules. He is the son of Zeus and travels the land protecting all the little people and stopping evil warlords like Xena. I really hope that I get to meet him one day.

Callisto was always a little bit of a Hercules fangirl as a child.

"The Shift Key of Mitigation allows for the Adjustments of Justice to be made quickly between different Cases of Criminal Activity."

"And, uh, I can't reveal their true identities, of course, since they're superheroes and all, but my favorite superhero from back where I come from in Colorado would probably have to be The Medical Napoleon!"

Janet didn't react to Vala's statement. But she might have choked on her coffee right then too. Just a little.

OOC: OMG, do you know how hard it is to find a pic of Janet with coffee?

Re: Turn Stuff In [Class #5]

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam, apparently less composed than Janet this morning, started giggling when she heard Vala's statement.

Marty looked up blearily from his cup of coffee and wondered why Sam and Janet were reacting that way.

Superheroes? Nah. Couldn't be.

Re: Turn Stuff In [Class #5]

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam waved hello to Marty. He looked a little rough this morning.

Re: Turn Stuff In [Class #5]

[identity profile] oatmanspatient.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Marty waved back wondering why Sam's mouth was all bloody.

Remembering what her aunt had said last night about her boyfriends always having a "sticky end" he made a note to check in on Jack just to make sure something bad hadn't happened.

"Are you okay?" whispered Janet, giving Marty a concerned look. He looked like he wasn't feeling well.

"Had a little run-in with an old sparring partner at Caritas last night. You might remember her? Used to teach abnormal psychology, batsh*t crazy, liked to drink the blood of the living?"

"Oh, great, Crazy Squid Lady is still out there?" Janet sighed. "I've only met her once, and that was enough. Did she do anything to you?"

"Got inside my head and freaked me out a little. Okay... a lot. Spent the rest of the night at Caritas... um... self-medicating," Marty whispered.

Now Aeryn has to figure out which one the shift key is.

Oh little shift key. So often ignored in the grand keyboard that is justice. Your importance in making offenses truly "capital" are overlooked in the grand scheme that is the qwerty system of society. Without it crimes would only be lowercase minor ones and defense lawyers would never exclamate.

"Justice is like a shift key, putting the important letters in big type so you can see them and know who they are!"

My favorite superhero from home is The Man From Easter Island. He's tall, he's strong, and his commitment to Justice is beyond reproach. Also, he'll pursue evildoers to the ends of the Earth.

In the Justice System, the Shift Key is like the judges that set criminals' punishments. They do the hard work and ensure that prisoners begin their sentences with a capital letter properly. (Also, the real shift key helps make metaphors extra Keen. Because what's a good Metaphor of Justice without capitalization?)

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Justice is the shift key of the keyboard. While at first glance, everything in society might appear to be the same, by holding in the Justice key you'll find hidden meanings behind it all. Things that seem insignificant at first, like a petty crime, might actually flow forth from capital Issues. What appears to be a meaningless sign like a รง might be turned into a hidden 9."

Cameron thinks long about a hero, but he can't come up with a name from Memphis except maybe this one; "Elvis brought Justice to music."

Metaphor

Justice is like a shift key because it's there to change things.

EC

My favorite defender of justice from my home town is my dad. He's never backed down from what he knew was right.

Re: Turn Stuff In [Class #5]

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Justice is the anti-shift key. True Justice knows no favorites and acknowledges no difference between evildoers. The shift key of evil, however, has the sole purpose of differentiating between words that are important and those that are less so, usually based solely on arcane rules of grammar, punctuation, and capitalization that may be confusing to the general populace or may have been changed so they no longer apply.

My favorite superhero from my universe would have to be The Translator. He uses his extensive knowledge of languages to further communication between different alien cultures to increase our knowledge and decrease misunderstandings. He also has a strong sense of what is Right and Wrong and is not afraid to take a stand for his beliefs, even if it will get him mocked mercilessly.

Metaphor:

Justice is like the shift key in that there's a lot of people who are too lazy to use it and, much as you might sympathize with the urge, you really think they're just being annoying and should get over it already.

Extra Credit:

Angel looked around nervously. Talk about awkward. He scribbled his answer down and hoped that Tick and Rory would be the only ones who read it.

My favorite defender of Justice from home is Buffy Summers. She's a young girl who took on a destiny that would have shattered most people. Every single night she's out fighting the forces of darkness. Even when things are at their worst Buffy refuses to surrender to hopelessness and despair. When trouble comes Buffy is out on the forefront, ready to fight it. She's strong, brave, beautiful, always reaches out to others, doesn't let her destiny keep her from making friends, and she tries to do what's best for the world, even if what's best means making hard decisions like killing her boyfriend when he turns evil. If more people could meet the Buffy I know, I bet they'd be inspired by her.

Angel quickly folded the paper up and handed it in.

Parker is far too pissed off to concentrate on metaphors. When she thinks of "shift" she's thinking of throwing someone off a cliff.

Archie has no idea what the shift key is, and what it has to do with a piano.

The shift key, like Justice, is something you rely on in your daily life without noticing that it's there. It's only when it's gone and everything runs together on the printed out copy of Society that you realize how much it affected you. Once the shift key is gone, it's only a matter of time until the Period of Equality and the Comma of Peace are gone as well.

And then? Chaos.

Anakin thought for a very long time before he wrote his extra credit assignment.

My favorite Defender of Justice is my Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The archives might be full of tales of heroic Jedi of the past, but Obi-Wan Master Kenobi will be one who will be remembered for generations. He is calm, he is patient, he is wise. He is already known as the Great Negotiator in some circles for his ability to get two sides to agree on issues that most beings would have given up as lost causes far sooner, and I have a feeling that this reputation will only grow with the increasing tensions back at home. He is the epitome of what it means to be a Jedi and to devote your life to the Force. I wish I could become half the Jedi Master Kenobi is.

Yeah, it's a little fawning. But it's Obi-Wan. Far away from home it's easy to overlook the parts of his Master's personality that drive him absolutely insane.
