Driver's Ed, Jan 20th (1st-2nd period)

"Okay, guys," Tommy says, looking at his assembled class. "Today, we're just going to work on catching you guys up to the Wednesday class. So we'll be letting out after the first hour..." he smiles, "does anyone have a problem with getting out of class early? Although, if you feel you need to, I'll put the car simulation back online for the second hour, and anyone who wants to stay can."

"But anyway, we're going to take a look at these," he says, passing everyone a handout. "I want you to look over the sheet and tell me what you think the signs mean. Feel free to discuss ideas with your classmates, as well."

Cally giggles a little. "I'm guessing sign thirty-one is a nice indicator of where to take your chips at a party?"

[identity profile] likeguidelines.livejournal.com 2006-01-20 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Barbossa snickered. "I be findin' the question mark one a mite disturbin', too. Be that meanin' 'Pop Quiz ahead'?"

"Or maybe, 'We have no idea where this road goes'," laughs Rose.

"Now thar's a comfortin' thought," Barbossa grumbled. "Here be yer road. Mayhaps we be finished pavin'! Good luck!"

He looked at number 16 with a frown. "And this one? Be thar a cave we be navigatin' around? Be those current flows o' some kind? And if thar be water on the road, wouldn't it be a mite smarter t' build a bridge o' some kind?"

"Most of them are self-explanatory," Aeryn says.

And pauses.

"Except for 1. And 2. 5. 12. 27. 28. 33 looks slightly sexist... 38 makes no sense. Neither does 40. 41 and 46 are just there to confuse me..."

"Thirty-three's not sexist, it means the road narrows, then widens a bit on. So you don't run into oncoming traffic, like."

"They should change the symbol, at least. I never would have thought of that being the meaning. I don't know who came up with these." Aeryn points to the question mark sign. "Like someone won't run off the road trying to figure that one out?"

Re: Discussion!

[personal profile] swerval_zero 2006-01-21 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I have no idea what that one is supposed to be." Zero raises her hand. "Dr. Oliver, is this one with the question mark meant to just be an example, or does it really mean 'We have no grinding clue what's ahead'?"

Re: Discussion!

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-01-21 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Are there that many speed limits or something? How come the signs for 'em are all different shapes, too?" Anders scratches his head. "I mean, the gas pumps I get, and stop and No Right Turn and all those are kinda obvious, but the ones with the numbers are confusing me."
swerval_zero: (determined Zero)

Re: Discussion!

[personal profile] swerval_zero 2006-01-21 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Zero looks briefly puzzled. "Is this a joke?" Then she glances about at her classmates. "Oh. Never mind." She sighs and starts trying to figure out who she needs to explain things to first.

Re: Discussion!

[identity profile] miss-monochrome.livejournal.com 2006-01-21 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Well... I guess most of 'em are pretty obvious. 'Cept for 38 which is... what, warning us about people being around? Aren't they usually? Well, except for where sign 39 is I guess.

I don't think I even wanna know what 41 or 46 mean. But my mun does."

*Hamlet's not stupid. He's seen road signs plenty of times before. It's just a somewhat unfortunate for him that they look a little different in the European Union (http://www.alltraveldenmark.com/Denmark/Car_Rental/Road_Signs.htm).*

Most of these seem familiar, although the colour scheme seems off a bit. Where did all these yellow diamonds come from, and where are all the red triangles? 13 means a no entry road, and 9 means that there will be a stop sign ahead, so you should prepare to stop when you see it. I'm not sure I wish to even begin guessing 33.
