History of Medieval England - Thursday 6th Period: Discussion 2: Dark Ages Britain

All right. So we touched briefly on King Arthur of gloriously fake memory, Alfred the Great who actually lived, and Anglo-Saxon Britain. Now it's time to talk.

Your homework, which should sound familiar already is to select a topic from your readings and cut and paste give me at least 100 words. Ready, steady, go.

Zero looks up from decorating the hem of her shirt with safety pins. "King Arthur was...well, he was hope, wasn't he? He's gonna come back and save us when times get tough, that kind of thing. And, I thought he was real, or, well, sorta. Like, some Welsh chieftan or summat. So, you were Lancelot, then?"

"Yeah, he was sort of the symbol of a unified front - the people being able to stand against anyone who came after them and win. It's easy to see why he - or the legend of him - would be remembered, especially when times got tough."

"Maybe he'll transfer to Fandom High one day and we'll know for sure," Cordy said absently.

Lana smiled, "That *would* be a little surreal, wouldn't it?"

"But that bit from the latest movie, about the warriors being reincarnated as horses, that's not true, right?" Zero asks Professor Pierson hopefully.

"Reincarnated as horses?" Lana asks in amazement. "I must have missed that movie!"

"You know, the one with the really hoosky Arthur and Lancelot as, I don't know, Romans, and wossname as Guineveire? She wore a little skimpy leather thing and painted herself blue."

"No. I think I would remember a blue-painted Guineveire. I couldn't have seen it. Sounds... interesting, though," Lana says a little skeptically.

*Vala, once again, is very, very confused.*

"We're thinking of having a Bad English History movie night," Parker told Vala in an undertone. "Do you think you'd be up for it?"

"Do you think it would help?" Vala asked, frowning.

Parker thinks about it. "Doubtful. But it can't hurt *too* much. And at least you'll get to see England in the background."

"O.K.," Vala nods. "That might help some anyway.... Thanks."

Cameron scratches the back of his head. "But wasn't he kinda blown out of proportion? I mean, sure he might have had some basis somewhere but most of what we know seems to have been made up later. So isn't wondering what king Arthur meant, more asking about the people who came up with his adventures later and what they wanted him to mean and not so much of what he really was?"

"Or is it like the pagans version of Jesus? Like, this guy that did good and is this big myth."

"See, my grandma would send you to hell for that one." Cameron chuckles. "But yeah, I think so. You got someone who they thought did right and they pretty much made a hero out of him."

"Uh huh, and you don't even have to be an alien to land into hell in her book. I'm sure I'm going straight down there myself."
