History of Art | January 17th - Period 3

As the class enter they are directed to a set of lecture handouts.

"Welcome, kids, today we'll be discussing Ancient Egyptian Art.

"First thing you have to know about the artists of Ancient Egypt, they were anal. Really anal. Everything about their art had to follow a strict series of rules, from the depiction of the various subjects, to hierarchical sizing and placement. Not much room for innovation there kids.

"Much of this art was also either religious or grave goods, translation, a lot of precious metals and stones were used. Hence why so many of the tombs of the Pharohs were desecrated by some bastards who beat me to it grave-robbers."

Autolycus continued in this vein for the better part of half an hour.

"To sum up, Ancient Egyptian art was rigid, religious, and anal, but so very, very shiny."

"This week's homework assignment is similar to last week's, however this time I would like you to find an example of Ancient Greek Art, and please remember this particular area is something of a specialty of mine."

Lee takes copious notes and writes down to study more about the Egyptians later in the library.

Yuffie is half-heartedly taking notes. She's paying a bit more attention to her doodles, which are flat looking ninjas. Hey, it's in egyptian style so it was on topic.... sorta... if you squit.

Xander gave her a tentative wave, noticing that she looked kind of distracted. and wondering whether they needed to arrange to do the reverse part of the studio assignment for Wednesday night, or if they'll end up finishing it off last night. Wow, temporal physics is hard.

Angels smiles a little and waves back. Her player is apparently an idiot and assumed Xander was drawing Angela while she was drawing him, and thus considered the scene done. Sorry for leaving you haning; I'll reply to your last comment so we can say they finished last night.

Bridge is either taking notes or working on a schematic of some sort. It's hard to tell.

Rory took detailed notes, and drew in the margins of her paper.

No, they weren't especially good drawings, but it would be hard to tell anyway, what with the fact that she scribbled through them abruptly after completing them.

Jessica took a short break from note taking to rest her hand. She scanned the room for familiar faces but her attention fell on an unfamiliar, yet kind looking, face. She wished that the girl hadn't crossed out her little drawings as she thought they were actually quite lovely. Smiling, Jessica then brought her attention back to her own notes.

Jessica sat properly in her seat, one hand on her lap, the other taking notes. As Jessica was a bit unexperienced at this, she copied down words that seemed important. Her page looked more like a grocery list than class notes:
~~~~~~~~~~
Egyptian
Really Anal
Art
Pharoh
Robbers
Shiny
Eggs
Butter
Lemons
Tissues
~~~~~~~~~~
Occasionally Jessica would glance out the window, sigh softly and smile.

Chiana tries to keep up, but when he says that the shiny gold things had already been taken, it's kinda hard for her to pay attention after that.

Venus de Milo (http://www.crystalinks.com/venusdemilo.jpg) - The "Aphrodite" of Melos, commonly known as the "Venus de Milo", is a beautiful marble statue now exhibited in the Louvre, Paris. Nothing is known of its sculptor. Experts date it between 200 and 100 BC.

Lee brings in an image from a attic red figure vase, attirbuted to the Carlsruhe Painter and located in the Museum of Fine Arts in the city Boston. It is the image of Apollo presenting himself to a rather astonished looking Muse (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v285/mtsfemme/apollomuse.jpg). Apollo is a naughty boy.

It be beautiful and valuable and far more portable than a statue.

It be from the Detroit Institute o' the Arts.

Perseus slaying Medusa from the temple of Apollo in Sicily, 600-ish BC, but it's in Palermo now.

We had a Medusa here. Ours had an eyebrow-ring and didn't give birth to a horse, though. I think.

Nike of Samothrace (http://pics.livejournal.com/krycek_rat/pic/0002rfy6/) - Displayed at the Louvre in Paris, France, the statue is thought to be one of the finest examples of Hellenistic art.

It is 8 feet tall, thought to be constructed by a Rhodian sculptor between 220 and 190 BC, and is tragically missing both arms as well as its head.
