Magical Theory (Monday, 01/16/2006, 5th Period)

"Hey, guys. Today, we're going to be watching The Craft, and on Wednesday, we'll discuss your impressions of the movie. Sound like a plan?"

ETA: The door to the classroom is closed to minimize disturbances from the hallway.

OOC: I was offline all day. OMG. Please ignore the misspelling of 'conjure' in the imdb entry. Or snark it.

2nd ETA: Please post at least one line in the 'discussion' post roleplaying watching the movie and commenting on it if you want. That will count as your discussion credit for today's class. I should have mentioned this in the inital post, but didn't, and I'm sorry. I've tried to ping everyone who signed in before I made this edit.

Xander signed in, and did not openly grin at the torture of being forced to watch Fairuza Balk in a schoolgirl outfit...

Kiki puts her head to one side. "I'm not sure I really like this representation of witches. It seems like they always go for the stereotype in the movies: using negative energy to get what you want. And while sure, doing that is going to produce some major backlashes on the caster...I just don't agree with how often witchcraft is portrayed as something evil."

[Mun has never seen the movie, just used the imdb link...hope this lines up with the actual plot!]

Xander distracts himself from OMG PLAID SKIRT for a second to consider Kiki's comment. "I think you're...probably right?" he says. "Not that anything in this movie is trying to be realistic, including that girl's cleavage. But I've seen enough people using magic to hurt other people to think it's totally off-base."

Re: Discussion: Watching 'The Craft'

[identity profile] kikidelivers.livejournal.com 2006-01-17 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Kiki nods. "But so many movies treat it like that. It's like in the 'Wizard of Oz' - Are you a good witch, or a bad witch? When really the answer is, 'Witches are human.'"

Xander grinned. "Yeah, no argument there. Good point. Or well, not all witches are human, probably. But they're people, anyway."

Re: Discussion: Watching 'The Craft'

[identity profile] kikidelivers.livejournal.com 2006-01-17 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"OK, also good point - not all witches are human, I agree," Kiki replies, "but just like with ordinary people, you can't just pigeon-hole them as good or bad."

maia though one of the girl reminded her of Paige when she switched her hair color back an forth. Other then that she didn't care for the dark headed girl, the bad one

((Ooc: Only saw the film once and thats all i could remember. going to bed again))

Paige watches the film with interest, when the cover of 'How Soon is Now," starts she gets a weird sense that the song is important to her in some way.

"I find how it shows the repercussions of casting spells interesting like when Nancy gets over taken by the power she calls to her and ultimately goes insane because of it. Also as the spells cast were all for personal gain and weren't particular nice spells to cast, as they were seriously messing with other peoples lives, which I'd like to think no real witch would be stupid or mean enough to do, And the fact the coven is stronger with four people because of the four elements and four corners is pretty cool."

Re: Discussion: Watching 'The Craft'

[identity profile] upforachase.livejournal.com 2006-01-17 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Cordelia grimmaces slightly. "To me this just seems like anti-witchcraft propaganda. Like, this is what witches do, they're all evil. They will all invoke freaky spirits and then your entire party is ruined. And yeah, okay, that happens sometimes, but there are good witches too, and nothing that I saw Willow do ever looked like any of that."

Re: Discussion: Watching 'The Craft'

[identity profile] upforachase.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Cordelia looked at Jenny blankly for a moment. "Uhh...yeah. Didn't you know? I think she got even more into magic in Xander's dimension and time, but yeah. Definitely witchy."

[identity profile] krycek-rat.livejournal.com 2006-01-17 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Krycek snorted softly. "I don't think anyone did any real research for this movie or cared if someone complained about it."

Re: Discussion: Watching 'The Craft'

[identity profile] sakuracchyan.livejournal.com 2006-01-17 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sakura watches the movie intently, frowning every so often. "Considering how little I know of the western take on 'witchcraft', I can't really say that this is right or wrong." She comments, then pauses. "...but it doesn't seem very realistic, any way you slice it."

Re: After Class

[identity profile] upforachase.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Cordelia hung around after, smiling at Logan as he walked out. "You wanted to see me?"

Re: After Class

[identity profile] upforachase.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Cordy looked at her, and nodded after a moment. "Yeah, I knew about your death. I was in 2000, before I came here. I just...forget, sometimes. That some of the people here are...actually dead." She paused and fiddled with her hands. "Man, that's weird. This place is weird. But yeah, Willow. She got pretty heavy into the magic. She was good, it really helped sometimes. I don't know what happened with it, where she went with it. It's too bad she's not here, too."

Did Jenny not have the office hours meeting on Friday for Bridge and Phoebe about the Independent Study for Magical Theory 101? Or did I miss it?
