Welcome Dance - the Gym

The streamers and banners are up. So are a zillion multi-colored helium balloons.

The floor is cleared, and the bandstand is up at the north side of the room, ready for Dusted Bunnies to take their places.

The refreshment table, with the (as yet) unspiked punch is in place. There are chips and stuff as well, Chex mix, a few nachos and some guacamole.

Party on, dudes! And welcome to Fandom High.

Should he lie? Should he tell the truth or should he lie?

He looked at Walter, and thought about everything he had learned from Mr. Beaubier. His mentor had always encouraged him to be honest in everything he did, whether it was sports or business or even something like friendship. He dreaded what might happen, but he knew what he had to do.

"Bridge is here," he groaned.

"Why is that bad?" Walter thought of what Victor had said after he'd passed out on the beach. Oh. And he and Walter were there together. Oh, that was awkward. "Do you want to go over there?"

"I don't know," he sighed, grateful that Walter didn't look upset. But then again, why should he? They were just there as friends, right? Maybe?

He decided to test something. "Would you mind if we did?"

"Er..." Walter looked at Pip and Pippi and took Victor's hand to pull him away a few feet with a muttered, "Excuse us for a moment."

"About that... I know you like Bridge, so... how are we going over there? As having come here together or not?" He'd forgotten about Bridge. God, what was he doing?

Victor thought a moment, thinking about Walter's reaction. First of all, he had pulled Victor aside. That meant he cared. Second, he was talking about them as if they were on a date. But how did Walter know he had a crush on Bridge? Maybe he had said it while drunk? He decided it didn't matter, though. For whatever reason, his feelings for Bridge seemed...almost insignificant. At that moment, he didn't care about trying to win Bridge's heart. Right then, he cared about taking care of Walter's.

"You know what, how about we just let him come to us?" he suggested. "I'm here with you."

"Alright," Walter gave Victor's hand, which he still hadn't relinquished, a squeeze. They were probably going to need to have a more direct talk sometime soon - partly because he really didn't want to.

"Then let's get back to our friends?"

"Sure," he said, squeezing the hand back. He didn't let it go as they walked back to the punch bowl.

Okay. He was at a school dance. With another guy. Holding hands. Where other people could see them.

Yes, that made him bloody well uncomfortable.

No, he wasn't going to bloody well stop because of it. It was stupid. Nobody cared.

He gave Victor a smile and pulled him a little closer so he wouldn't have to yell as much over the music. "What else do we do at these tihngs? Talk, drink punch that hopefully won't make us bark like dogs, and dance?"

"Pretty much," he admitted, definately not minding the closeness. "In the movies, though..." he blushed, not sure if he should continue.

"What?" Walter leaned closer, curious. "Remember, I haven't seen most of this stuff."

Victor's blush intensified, both from what he was about to say and the ever increasing closeness between him and the ~~object of his affection~~ other boy. "Well..." he continued, licking his lips. "Sometimes, usually in a movie involving prom, the dates go somewhere after the dance and...have sex.." he muttered.

"I think there's a lot of that going on around here based on what I hear on the radio and overhear in the halls," Walter said, leaning just a little closer because he was starting to think that pink undertone in Victor's cheeks was cute and it was kind of fun to make him blush.

They were definitely going to need to have a candid, and private talk sometime soon.

"Probably," Victor admitted. "I don't think I'm ready for sex, though. I mean, it looks fun and all, but it always seems to...I dunno...complicate things too much. If I'm with someone, I want to be with him because he makes me happy, because he's a good friend. I want sex to be a way we express love, not just do it because it feels good.

"Then again, I've probably just been watching too many movies. Mr. Beaubier used to tease me for been "so idealistic". Do..do you think I'm wrong to want that?"

"I-"

Walter opened his mouth and closed it. It was what the movies in his time said. It was how everyone was supposed to think things worked.

It just wasn't how his life worked.

"I don't know," he said and shook his head.

Victor watched Walter, making sure to really listen to and observe him. He seemed to be struggling with something, and Victor had an idea what it was.

"Look...whatever happened before...don't worry about me judging you, okay? Whatever you think, I really want to know. I've had people lie to me before, and it doesn't feel good. So, whatever you're thinking, please, just say it."

"I don't know, Victor. Not much gets done for love in my world." He shrugged uncomfortably. "People say they want to do things for love, but I haven't seen much of it."

Victor nodded, understanding. "Professor Logan used to say the same thing. I overheard him talking to this senior who was having girlfriend troubles. But you wanna know what he also said?" He leaned in a little bit to enhance his point. "If you want something enough, you fight for it, no matter the cost, because livin' without it is damn harder than dying with it."

"I think I would have gotten along with your Professor Logan." Walter smiled a little. "You had a lot of people to talk to before you came here. I hope you don't mind if I say I sort of envy you."

Victor was flattered. "You don't have to, Walter. Not at all."

Then, some slow chords began to play, and Victor's eyes brightened. "I think I owe you a slow dance (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/512650.html?thread=23699850#t23974026)?" he reminded.
