Driver's Ed, Jan 13th, Period 1-2

Tommy watches his students file in to the Danger Shop, which currently is set up to resemble a typical classroom, for the most part. He might look a little unnerved as he recalls how Wednesday's class went. At the front of the class, is this:



"Hello everyone!" He greets them, once everyone has sat down. "If you can just sign the roll sheet, we can get started. I'm Dr. Oliver, you can call me Dr. O if you want, and I'll be teaching you how to drive. Just to clarify, the type of vehicles we'll be learning to drive in this class are typical 21st-century automobiles, commonly known as cars."

He looks around at his assembled class. "Please tell me you've seen a car before," he asks. "Anyway, today's assignment? Get in the car, and just... try to get a feel for the controls. Since this is only a simulation, the car won't move, no matter how hard you press the gas pedal. So... go at it. And feel free to ask me any questions you might have."

Looking around at the dashboard and controls, Aeryn might look a little confused. She can pretty much assume what the mirrors are for, which only means that there isn't a better way of seeing behind you and the scopes on this thing must not be worth anything.

And she can't find the on switch. How are you supposed to prep the engine without an on switch?

She can figure out some things by playing around, but she's not even going to try anything like a gas pedal- though she does know what that does, thank you- until she knows the rest of it.

Finally she sighs and can't help herself. "Where are the weapons on this thing?"

Remembering the last time she was in a car, Chiana could pretty much figure out that you moved the steering to turn, and that you turned something on the side of that to get the engine on.

After that, she was completely lost.

"And you'd go forward or reverse... how?" The steering didn't seem to move back or forth, just turned. Driving around in circles didn't seem very productive And the numbers made no sense unless humans had somehow figured out how to go hetch 120.

Zero peers at the car. "Not bad. Automatic, or are you going to attempt to teach us manual?" She pauses. "Er. Sir."

Cally sits in the driver's seat and makes silly noises as she plays with the controls.

Anders signs in with an extra-large cup of coffee in each hand. He hopes Thirteenth Colony cars have cupholders.

Anders's first thought when he gets behind the wheel is that he's kind of sorry the steering wheel makes it too cramped to fit two people in the driver's seat. His second thought is that hey, it looks pretty much exactly like cars back home, except that the numbers and units on the instrument panel are different; he might have to figure out unit conversions and that kind of scares him.

He turns the wheel experimentally a few times, works the gas, brake, and clutch, and plays with the gearshift and signal light lever -- yep, almost exactly like cars back home. Hopefully this shouldn't be too hard. Right?

Barbossa spent a long time staring at the shiny, shiny...thing before finally figuring out how the doors opened.

The steering wheel was familiar--ships had those, after all--but the floor pedals confused him.

After a ten minute search where he face grew more and more concerned, he finally asked a question.

"Where be the anchor t' stop this thing?"

"No weapons..." Tommy consults his attendance sheet, "uh, Aeryn. They're not standard equipment for most Earth vehicles. Unless you count the driver as a potential weapon." He adds.

"There's a dance?" Tommy blinks, feeling uninformed and kinda clueless.

"See those pedals down by your feet, there... Chiana?" Tommy once again consults the attendance sheet. Poor guy, so bad with names. "The one on the right is a gas pedal, so-called because it controls the amount of fuel going to the engine, and that's how you go forward."

"Automatic, for now, uh... Zero," once again, consulting the attendance sheet. Mostly because the player doesn't have a clue in hell about how to drive standard.

"The anchor is... that floor pedal on the left, there, uh... Barbossa."

Tommy covers his smile at Cally's enthusiasm with a cough, as laughing at one's students would probably make for a bad impression.

Tommy watches Anders figure out the controls, feeling just the slightest bit of relief at the fact that he's yet to ask any... interesting... questions.
