Multi-Disciplinary Self Defense, 7th Period

Duncan stands at the front of the classroom. He looks much more serious than has been usual for gym class. He seems already stretched out and limber. Large mats have been lain out on the floor. Several punching bags have been added. A trunk in one corner holds padded safety gear, including helmets.

“Okay, first things first. I’ll read off the class roster, and you raise your hand when I say your name. Angel. Vala Mal Doran. James Ford. Susan Ivanova. Jack Harkness. Cameron Mitchell. Han Solo. Susan Sto Helit. Buffy Summers. Kara Thrace .”

After that is done, he stands at the front of the group. “I want you to take a look through the safety gear. Pick helmets and padding, both for close fighting and fencing. Also, a glove for you to trade off taking punches. Make sure these things fit. If they don’t, I’ll see about ordering new ones once we have you measured. Everybody needs these. I don’t care how good you are, make sure you have fitting ones.” He waits for everyone to choose their gear.

“These go in a locker. Within reasonable limits, I want you to care for your gear. If you need repairs, though, talk to me.”

"Attendance is required. You can't learn if you aren't here *regularly*. If you aren't going to be here, don't waste my time and yours. Detention will be assessed for every unexcused absence."

“For this class, we go a unit at a time, starting with hand to hand. We’ll do a bit of fencing later in the semester, and knife fighting, provided people are interested, with practice weapons.”

“First part of the class goes over technique. Second part is open sparring. If you like, you can stay on late for the second part to go longer. The TA position is still open. If you are interested, talk to me after class. I’ll select one or two TAs depending on the skill levels of those applying.”

“Start off with stretching and warming up. If you have your own routine for that, I want to see it. If you don’t, raise a hand.”


OOC: Please note that I have a stiff schedule, and I understand that you might also. I leave posts open for at least two days for attendance.

"Okay, folks. I'm going to pair you off and see what you can do. If you don't know where to start, raise your hand. If you do know where to start, keep it gentle for a beginning. This is so I can see how you move, not so you can beat your partner."

Jack raised his hand. "I have no idea where to start. I'm clueless."

"Well okay," Angel said, with a perfect deadpan, "but if you go down it might be hard."

He grins. "And you're smart enough to admit it rather than try to fake it. Good. Come here a moment." He sets Jack to trying some basic drills, to see how quickly he can pick things up and if he has any movement issues.

Jack's pretty graceful, and a couple of Mr. MacLeod's drills remind him of that one time Dr. Pierson tried to teach him swordfighting. But the basic theory of do-this-to-counter-that eludes him.

Mac shakes his head. "Don't worry about counters yet. Just basic movement. We'll put it together later."

Han looks around for a partner. He's not sure what they're supposed to do. His style is mostly streetbrawling.

"Han, you're with Kara for the moment." He winks at Kara. "Don't be too mean."

Han rolls his eyes and looks down the height gap at the little blonde.

Duncan's eyebrows go up when he sees that. He walks around so that Kara can see him but Han can't and mouthes "Kick his ass" at her.

"I'll try not to hurt you too badly," Kara says, plastering on a smile.

Vala *sighs*, gives in, and raises her hand, while looking around for a partner.

"Like I said to Jack, at least you're smart enough to admit when you don't know something. That's a lot better than making an idiot of youself, trust me. I've seen enough students try to fake it that I make examples." He models some basic drills to get her started.

Buffy smiles. "I need a partner, too," she says to Vala. "I'm Buffy."

Ivanova sidles up to the other Susan. "Partners?" She grins a bit. "I'm a bit out of practice with my hand-to-hand, but I won't be too hard on you."

Susan looks nervous, shifting uncomfortably. "So... You'll try to hit me, and I'll try to stop you?"

"That's usually the way it works. Unless you want to try to hit me and I'll block. Let's do that instead." She takes up a defensive posture, her hands open and in front, elbows in, knees slightly bent, a few feet away from the other girl. "The name's Ivanova, by the way. Now try and hit me."

Cameron shrugs. He's never really sure how to start things off. He does what Aeryn taught him and brings up his hands in defense. While he's waiting for a partner to show up, he does some jabs in the air to loosen up his shoulders and to keep busy.

Seeing everyone else paired up, Sawyer approaches Cameron, he's never really met the boy but he's seen him before.

"Hey. Need a partner?" Sawyer cocks his head to the right a bit, a curious look on his face.

Cameron stops what he's doing and nods, recognising Sawyer from psych class.

"Looks like it," he says. "You got any experience?"
