After leaving the swimming pool Maia stops into the library. "Hi, I lost my library card over the holidays. Do I need to pay a replacement fee?"

The Librarian swings down from where he had been climbing on the shelves, and lands with a loud thud in front of Maia. He looks at her curiously, having not hear the question from on top of the stack of books.

"Ook?"

Maia's mouth fell open a little at the orangutan, "I- well I lost my library card and I needed to know if there was a fee to replace it."

The Librarian knuckle-walked his way to the circulation desk, motioning for Maia to follow him. Once there, he turns and pokes Maia in the shoulder, and then holds his hands up in a gesture that indicates "I don't know.". It is possible he is looking for your name.

"Ook?"

"Oh yeah sorry of course my name is Maia Rutledge, R-U-T-L-E-D-G-E" she said intently watching him.

The orangutan quickly goes about procurring a new card for Maia.

"OOOK! Oook ook. Oook oook ookook!"

His arms flail wildly, including a few motions that could, in the right circumstances, be considered detrimental to one's physical well-being, interspersed with gestures towards the new card.

He then holds the card out, raising what would be his eyebrows if he were not covered entirely in orange fur.

"Oook?"

Maia looked at the card and nodded "That would be me. Thank you Mr..um..Mr. Oook."

The orangutan rolls his eyes and says, in the most disdainful voice possible.

"Ook."

Despite its monosyllabic nature, there is a the distinct impression that, perhaps, your intellegence has been called into question.

Without waiting for a response, the orangutan swings up onto the nearest shelf and resumes his libary activities.

Maia looks at the orangutan with complete disgust on her face to match his tone and walks away "Whoever heard of an orangutan running a library anyway."

Later that afternoon, Angela and Lyta walk into the library. "So, um, these are the books," Angela says, keeping her eyes peeled for the new librarian. "We use Dewey Decimal system, mostly. It has pretty much anything you'd want."

Lyta follows a step or two behind Angela. She pauses beside a shelf, and places her hands against the stacks almost reverently. Angela's comment slowly filters through her whirling mind. "Dewey Decimal?" she asks.

"It's a system for filing books. It's sort of complicated, but it keeps the books about the same thing all together. Like, all the books on language are in the 400s, everything on painting is in the 750s. And so on."

"I forgot you might not be from a place that used it. Where are you from, by the way?"

"I..." She lowers her eyes a bit. When she looks back up, she is smiling ruefully. "Let's just say a long ~~time and~~ way from here, where they don't use the Dewey Decimal system." She doesn't want to talk about it -- yet.

The Librarian takes this moment to swing down from a shelf above them and land with a resounding thud in front of the two girls. He is holding a book on landscape achitechture that, for some reason or another, keeps making its way into ancient hisotry.

He eyes the two girls curiously.

"Ook?"

Angela looks at Lyta, making a mental note that where she's from seems to be a sensitive spot. But it's almost forgotten as she faces the large orange creature. "I guess this is the librarian?" she says to Lyta, cautiously. Of course Parker and Janet weren't joking.

Cautiously, she holds out a hand for him to shake. "Hi. I'm Angela Chase? I worked here last term. Are you the new librarian?"

The Librarian takes Angela's hand in his own, careful not to crush it as he shakes vigourously.

"OOOK!"

He then points to the girl with her, curiously.

"Ook?"

Angela politely shakes the Librarian's hand. "This is Lyta Alexander. She's new here and I was giving her a tour."

I've seen weirder things ... not many, though. In fact, right then she's hard-pressed to come up with any.

The Librarian spreads is overly long arms wide in an all-encompassing gesture, spinning slightly, waving the book on architechture dramatically, indicating the Library.

He seems quite proud of it.

"Oook!"

"Yes, it looks very... organized." Lyta looks to Angela as though to ask, What do you say to an ape?

Angela gives Lyta a look back that says You're asking me?

"It does," she finally says, weakly. "Have you been working on it, Mr. ... Librarian?"

She hopes she sounds respectful and not entirely stupid.

The Librarian looks up, giving Angela a apprising look. He claps his hands together once, gleeful that someone has finally called him by the proper title.

"Oook!"

He then gestures to the book in his hand and then the ancient history section, seeming slighly aggitated. He appears to be glaring at the library as a whole.

"Oook. Oook oook."

The freshman furrows her brow. "That book was in the ancient history section?"

"Is there a problem?" Angela asks carefully, making a mental note of the distance between herself and the exit.

[OOC: Going to make dinner. Back in 45 minutes or so.]

Lyta looks to the ~~monkey~~ ape with raised brows. She'd seen stranger, but it was still something of a surprise to see a ~~monkey~~ ape carrying a book about architecture.

""Weird," Angela mutters under her breath. "Sorry."

The orangutan shakes his hands and head at Angela. He points to the library and glares.

"Oook."

"Um," Angela says intelligently, having no clue what "ook" means.

"Should we have a library staff meeting sometime ~~in hopes that Zero or someone will speak ape~~? Like -- I don't know, is tomorrow during lunch good for you? I don't have class until sixth period."

Angela takes a moment to recover after their conversation with the Librarian finishes, then returns to the tour

"Okay. So. Those are the books, which usually are in order. The checkout desk is over there," she says, walking as she talks. "There's usually an aide or two, or all five of us when we get bored, behind it. Return books there. The tables are for studying or flirting, whatever."

"And Special Collections is through those double doors. Don't go in without a note for a teacher. Actually, don't go in at all, if you can help it."

She seems very emphatic on the last point.

"Special Collections?" She watches the door as they continue past it, then nods, taking Angela's comment and filing it away. She wondered what books could be so terrible she should have to avoid them.

Angela sighs. "It's one of many very strange things about this place. The books in there are --" she flails for words. "Enchanted, I guess. They do things if you touch them without gloves, and sometimes just for the heck of it. I wen tin their twice. Once I ended up at the edge of a library in another realm, according to Parker. The other time -- I warn you this is going to sound crazy -- I touched the wrong book, and a me from another dimension got plopped down. Took about a week to figure out how to get me me back. And it turned my boyfriend into a dog while he was trying to figure it out."

She pushes back a piece of hair. "So I plan to avoid it if I can this term."

Lyta smirks. Oh yes, she had seen some equally disturbing things, though they weren't usually the result of enchantments or magic; they usually involved Zathras or the Great Machine. She understood why Angela might want to avoid it. "I think I'll join you."

It wasn't going to be hard to be normal -- at least in comparison to her surroundings.

"Wise choice," Angela says, relieved that Lyta doesn't seem to be the "Danger? Yay!" type ~~unlike certain former hit men she could name.~~ She isn't a coward, but she doesn't see the point of going after trouble. In this school, it will find you anyhow.

"Anyhow, that's the library, and I'm not sure any of the other classrooms are unlocked yet. Want to go get that coffee?"

"That sounds wonderful." Lyta smiles, remembering the taste of the espresso drink. "And maybe you could recommend some good food...I'm not familiar with the menus."

"Food is kind of a problem," Angela says with a shrug. "The Perk has muffins and sandwiches and stuff, and there are two decent diners and a Chinese place. But on campus? Your best bet is to just keep stuff in your room. The Chef is kind of scary. He's, um ... do you know what a Muppet is?"

"Come on to the Perk and I'll fill you in."

A muppet?, she thinks. Frowning, she shakes her head and follows Angela out of the library. As the doors close, she can be heard responding, "No, I don't think I do..."
