Abnormal Psychology (12/13/2005)

ETA: CLASS IS NOW CLOSED.

"Just as a reminder, you guys should have all your make-up homework in to me by today," says Jenny. "Talk about your experiments and how they've gone so far, ask me questions if you have them, and use as much of the period as you need to go out and find people to experiment on."

OOC: My boss is coming in tomorrow, which means I need to be caught up on everything as of now. Grading shall happen later in the week. OCD threads coming soon are up. Also, I don't think I got all comment notifications for last week. I'll go back and check the threads tonight.

Vala signs in, having tracked down Jack and hauled him along with her.

"Trust me, it's better you don't remember the first professor," she muttered under her breath.

Jack looks at the teacher and smiles. "Hi. I've lost my memory. Is that going to affect my final grade?"

Oh, and he signs in, too.

"No," Jack says. "Everyone's suggested it, though. Along with the possibility that I'd been bitten by a gremlin or run into someone named Drusilla."

"Yeah, thanks for letting me go last time. They kept me overnight, and prononced me in perfect health, memory might come back on its own, who knows." Jack sighs. "I'm working with Paige on our project, so even though I remember nothing about the semester I should be able to get that in."

Anders signs in, still backpack-less and hauling his books around in his arms.

This state of affairs has him looking rather flustered, but he's still in a good mood.

Vala draws up a plan for getting a table, some cookies from The Swedish Chef who she thinks she can con into it after yesterday, and the wording for the experiment.

Luckily they didn't need to pre-arrange subjects. Free cookies for answering a simple question out in front of the school on finals week ought to be enough to draw a group.

"Think we really lucked out on coming up with this assignment," remarks Anders. "I mean, cookies!"

He leans over to peer at Vala's notes. "Any of this stuff you want me to do? I'll be busy tonight and tomorrow, but after that I'm pretty much free whenever."

Jack makes notes on what he discussed with Paige at the Perk; to wit, setting up in Study Hall tomorrow and asking people to memorize lists of words.

Sigmund Freud (extra credit essay)

Freud is widely known as the father of psychoanalysis, the study of the unconscious mind to learn about our conscious thought processes and actions. One of his theories was that events ( both traumatic and normal) which happen to us through our lives are stored (or repressed) in our unconscious mind (that which we are unaware of) but can influence our conscious mind though our actions.

Psychoanalysts use a variety of techniques to attempt to uncover what is in the unconscious mind including the Rorschach inkblot test, where the patient has to say what they see in an ambiguous ink blot picture. Free association, where the patient is encouraged to say the words they associate with others without thinking about what to say, this, would then reveal what it behind certain issues they have and dream analysis, where Freud believed our unconscious thoughts would manifest themselves as other objects in our dreams.

Freud’s theory on the importance of the unconscious mind has been criticised on a number of counts, namely it is impossible to find out exactly what is happening in this part of the mind as it is intrinsically hidden from our conscious mind

(Alternate Assignment)

Manic-Depression is a mood disorder also know as bipolar disorder is a from of depression with symptoms that include the sufferer experiencing both periods of depression and of mania. The most noticeable It is this extreme difference of mood that gives the disorder it’s name.

The key symptoms to look for with manic-depression is (during manic episodes) an inappropriately good mood, reckless behaviour, being overly talkative, increased activity, difficulting concentrating and during depressive episodes- a change in sleeping patterns (ie too much/too little, low energy/motivation, change in appetite, feelings of worthless and suicidal thoughts.

Manic-Depression is believed to be an inherited disorder caused by differing levels of dopamine, noradrealine and serotonin (low levels for depression high levels for mania.) These changes in chemical levels makes the disorder difficult to treat.

Paige comes in after Lit class, looking worried.

"Erm Ms Calendar? I bumped into Jack Harkness yesterday and he seems to have completely lost the last two months of his memory, so as far as I know he knows nothing about our experiment"

Paige breaths a sigh of relief "Thank you Ms Calendar, we were going to meet up tomorrow do go through everything tomorrow anyway, so I'll call him again and ask him to still do that."

Yeah, trying to schedule between the two of us was something of a pain, but it's going great! Much better than I thought it would! ;-)
