Journalism Class - Tuesday December 6

Spider is absent, although the cat is sprawled across the desk, looking smug. It is currently using today's attendance pad as a scratch pad - and not in the conventional sense. The huge screen behind it is lit with two lines of text.

"I hate the holiday season and I do not celebrate.

Take the time to choose a holiday tradition of some sort and attempt to convince me that it would be fun."

There's a page missing here, damn it. Will correct when I can. Basically, a newsfeed reporter made the mistake of approaching Spider and asking him, jocularly, how he was going to celebrate the holidays and who with.

Chloe sits down and thinks for a few minutes before beginning to write.

"One holiday tradition that seems to have grown more popular in my hometown is caroling. The general idea of caroling is to gather with a group of friends and travel from one house to another, serenading the inhabitants with joyous tunes of familial bonding and the birth of Jesus. However, a vast improvement on this idea comes when the group of friends get drunk beforehand (preferably on festive eggnog, but any alcohol will do) and sing alternate lyrics to the songs, such as 'Stephen, the Alternative Lifestyle Reindeer.' Extra points are often awarded for making it all the way around the neighborhood without tripping and injuring oneself."

John takes his seat and starts to write.

Holiday traditions? The one memorable holiday tradition that's stayed with me throughout the years is the annual viewing of A Christmas Story. Now, I'm not a sap but how can one resist Ralphie and his red Ryder BB Gun? And how can you not laugh at the tongue stuck to the pole bit? And really, he's just a cute kid. The glasses, the blonde hair, the bright eyes. Even while my sister's beat me up on Christmas Eve, even when my mother told me I was getting coal for Christmas, A Christmas Story could always cheer me up."

Well, I used to celebrate Christmas Eve by camping out in a sleeping bag on my parents' front lawn in a vampire and demon infested town built over the mouth of Hell, because it was better than staying inside and trying to dodge the yelling, flying chicken parts, spilled beer, and my Uncle Steve's Aunt Doris' wandering fingers at the annual Harris Bucket-o-Holiday-Takeout-Cheer. That was kind of fun. The not being in the house, I mean.

I think exchanging gifts is fun. I mean, shopping can suck, but you get to make people happy. Plus, when you're done, you have a bunch of stuff you didn't have before. And if you give to the Salvation Army or whatever, you get to really make someone feel better for pretty minimal effort. Also? Wrapping paper is pretty.

Did you know that in one culture it's a tradition (http://www.holidays.net/chanukah/dreidel.html) for young children to gamble and bet during the holiday season? It's not even so much a game of skill as it is a measure of luck, all they do is spin a small top and whatever letter lands up decideds whether the person who spun gets everything in the pot, half the pot, nothing, or has to put something in. Truely a great game tradition.

Heh. Family traditions. I haven't heard that one in a while.

Veronica writes:

My dad and I started a new tradition a few years ago... when my mom left. Every Christmas Eve, we make hot chocolate and I bake cookies and we sit and watch the movie A Christmas Story when it starts playing for twenty four hours. We laugh and just enjoy being together.

Beka considers for a moment before snorting and scrawling, 'Holiday tradition number one in the Valentine Clan: getting drunk with Uncle Festus. Dad always said it was the best way to learn how not to get too drunk. 'Cause, once you're that drunk, Uncle Festus would steal your money, I.D., and anything else you might have that he thought he might need.'
