Speech Comm

[She comes in Very. Early. She writes on the board and heads to the Teacher's Lounge.]

Interpersonal Communication for Wednesday is in the hands of my Assistant. Listen to Elizabeth, or find yourself weeping at my feet. Tomorrow.

Non Verbal Communication.
Anger is a secondary emotion, springing from pain and/or fear. How do you convey anger non verbally? How does your body reveal the truth...pain and/or fear?

Discuss. No leaving early. Respect E.

CJC

Elizabeth leans against CJ's desk at the front of classroom, looking serious.

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Morning, Liz." Jack reads the board. "Huh. She wasn't in the TARDIS this morning so I figured that she was here. Have you seen her?"

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Morning, Jack," Elizabeth smiles at him, before looking serious again. "Not since last night... she was drinking a lot, alone, at Caritas."

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack frowns, confused. "That's weird. I wondered why I didn't see her at Shane's last night. I figured she'd gone out with Ten and Dr. Pierson, since they weren't there either. It doesn't make any sense that she was alone."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth shook her head. "She left a message on Adam's answer machine... that's Dr. Pierson, isn't it? She wasn't happy last night, and that's an understatement."

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, Adam is Dr. Pierson's first name." Jack is looking more concerned by the second.

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll head to the library and see him after class," Elizabeth says, her face echoing Jack's concern. "She was just... drinking," she sighs.

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack walks into class and sees the board.

"Hey Lizard, how's the world treating you today?"

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Better than the world will be teaching you if you're not nice to me," she replies, smiling at him.

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Depends on the bribes offered."

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think I still have some chocolate..."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Chocolate's good," she says. "So's an answer to the question on the board."

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"How do I convey anger non-verbally? Well. A fist usually tends to help."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth raises her eyebrows. "Okay, yes. That's one way."

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Glaring works too, if you wanna take that whole 'non-violent' approach."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"How about the way we hold ourselves?"

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"How do we hold ourselves when we're angry, or in fear?" she asks, calmly.

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well. Shaking tends to go pretty well for both. So does... what's it called? Not flexing but... rigidity? The thing where you tense all up."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Tensing up is usually a pretty good description."

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's it! Tensing! That's the word!"

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth grins. "Thank you, Jack."

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"My pleasure."

[identity profile] dbiers.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
After running into a talking toaster (http://www.livejournal.com/users/whitedeathpod/28485.html?thread=1977925#t1977925) this morning, D'anna was a little more than weirded out. She nursed her coffee a while before pipping up. "We non-verbally express anger through glaring, crossing our arms, scowling, etc; the truth though a boldness of stance backed by conviction, looking others directly in the eye; pain through a grimace; and fear through tension, wide-eyes, and a change in breathing."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth nods. "How about through our locomotion?" she asks. "Morris said that the style of physical movement in space also communicates a great deal, as well as affecting the feelings of the person doing the moving."

[identity profile] dbiers.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, the way we move, sharp and tight, or languid and relaxed, can tell more than we expect." D'anna sips her coffee. "The better the receiver knows the sender, the more certain movements can reveal."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"How about the misinterpretation of non-verbal communication?"

[identity profile] dbiers.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"If you have a wide mix of people as we do here, then what in one culture indicates a particular emotion might indicate something radically different in another thus causing miscommunication."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ain't that the truth," Elizabeth grins. "Even something as simple as the "okay" sign," she says, illustrating it. "Can sometimes be misunderstood as "zero" and therefore worthless in some places and cultures. Or it may be seen as a symbol of female genitalia and is understood to be obscene."

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory carefully surveys Elizabeth. "Anger is revealed by posture, and facial expression. And fear...often is betrayed facially, as well." She unconsciously crosses her arms around herself as she says this. "Is everything okay with Professor Cregg?" she asks in a low voice.

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"What sort of facial expressions?" Elizabeth asks quietly, not wanting to push Rory. "Linking back to misleading non-verbal communication, can it be misinterpreted?"

She glances around the classroom, and moves towards Rory. "I don't think everything's okay, per se," she admits. "I'm going to go and talk to someone after class about her."

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Narrowed eyes, a hardening of features...in some cases, a change in blood flow to the cheeks," Rory says. Her eyes dart up to Elizabeth's. "For anger, I mean. Fear...is a little too close to home right now."

"Do you know what happened? Or if there's anything we can do?" she adds, nodding towards CJ's conspicuously empty seat.

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth nods, and rests a comforting hand on Rory's arm. "No problem. Hey, did you want the extra coffee?"

She bit her lip. "Not exactly," she says. "I ran into her at Caritas last night. She didn't want to talk... I'm not sure how she's feeling this morning. Most certainly hungover, I'm sure."

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Coffee?" Rory asks, perking up. "Coffee's good."

She winces. "Eep. Rough night, I suppose. Poor thing."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth grins, and hands over the extra cup. "It's just white," she says.

She nods. "Yeah, something like that, I'm sure."

Piper is concerned when she doesn't see the professor in class, but doesn't say anything. Instead, she focuses on the discussion. "We convey anger with facial expressions, particularly glaring. Usually, the eyes give away the hidden emotion such as pain or fear."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's true. But there are other forms of nonverbal communication. What about using other parts of the body for communication?"

[identity profile] wannabelawyer.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Tone of voice is a big thing. And some people tend to get really tense, they hold themselves differently, or clench their fists, or set their jaws, stuff like that, and you can just tell they're really angry."

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"How do you know about the tone of voice in non-verbal communication?" Elizabeth asks lightly, half grinning. "What about the pain or fear behind it... how is that revealed as the true emotion?"

[identity profile] marsheadtilt.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Anger can be conveyed through stance, such as standing with your legs apart and your hands on your hips," Veronica says.

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"But is that stance solely linked to anger?"

[identity profile] miss-monochrome.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Obvious avoidance of being touched can also convey anger. Crossing your arms over your chest, backing away from contact, things like that.

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Is that due to anger stemming from pain or fear or both perhaps? Could it be misinterpreted?
