"No problem. I appreciate you picking up the mail." At least, he did until he caught sight of the logo on the envelope. His sudden, dead stillness clearly communicated his shock in the moment before he picked it up, balancing it in his hand without opening it.
"Hey!" exclaimed Janet indignantly. "I was trying to figure out what fund-raising organization that was."
At least, she would have been trying to figure that out if she hadn't already steamed open the envelope, read and copied the letter, and then resealed it.
"I think I injured my suspension of disbelief just now," says Janet dryly. "You've really got to come up with some better excuses. So who is it? An old girlfriend? The alumni association finally track you down? Never send them money; then they really never leave you alone."
