Abnormal Psychology (11-18-05)

Drusilla is reading over last week's essays and growing increasingly angry. She glares at Cameron, then scribbles on an essay, then glares at Cameron again.

"Murder," she snaps, after everyone has signed in. "What drives one to murder another? Ignore petty questions of self-defense or euthanasia. This isn't an ethical debate. What causes one person to murder another? Is it insanity?"

"We're going to work on class projects. Joint class projects. This counts as your midterm grade." Drusilla looks irritated at the thought of handing out projects. "You're going to develop psychological experiments to be run on your fellow students." She thinks for a minute. "You should probably have their permission first, so do a permission slip. And don't hurt the little boys and girls irreversibly. Don't run the experiment, though. That comes later, after your midterms have been approved and the player gets OOC permission from the mods for you to do them."

She looks around. "Pair up. Cameron, you get to be partnered with whoever's left over, or if someone is out today. Then each of you discuss what you'd like to do, and write a 100 word proposal for your experiment. We'll talk about experimental design another time." Drusilla's smile was malicious. "And at that time, we'll introduce you all to hell statistical analysis."

Drusilla looks angry. "Cameron Mitchell. Vala Mal Doran. See me after class. Separately."

"Anyone who has missed a class essay needs to make it up or I'll start giving detentions for missed homework. This includes excused absences. If you'd rather not go back and look up what was missed, come and see me and we'll work out a special project for you to do to make up your grade."

"I'm fond of not dying. What's your idea?"

"The effect of fear on memory, I'm thinking we'd have two groups, both have to learn say a list of words then repeat them to us, one group just does it, the other group gets told that for every word they miss out bthe receive some sort of pain or punishment." she grins, "I thought it was something the professor might like the sound of."

"Considering that I practically forget my own name whenever she looks at me... yeah, that sounds fantastic. But I don't know if I'm comfortable with threatening to hurt someone. Maybe if we scared them? Like get a big set of cymbals and crashed them together right before they were going to start reciting the list?

"And yeah, I imagine the professor would love it."

"Well we'd not actually do it, ee'd just make them think we were, so it would be anticipation of what was to come if they forget, so we could make the hypothesis that although the fear would make they want to get words right, the worrying caused by it would actually make them remember less, but if you're not comfortable with doing that then yeah your idea works too. I don't mind either way."

"Let's start developing it and see how it goes. I'm just a bit freaked on the subject of hurting people since I tried to kill Professor Cregg, you know?"

Suggested proposal:

Hypothesis: Fear negatively affects memory

Experiment: Two groups. Both groups are given a list of words to memorize for a set amount of time. The list is then taken away. One group (the control group) is asked to recite as many of the words on the list that they remember. The other group is asked the same thing, but is told that for every word missed (either forgotten or misremembered), they will suffer a punishment (to be devised later).

Paige bites her lip looking worried, "what I had no idea! Sorry, I guess we can work out details you'll be comfortable with out of class yeah?"

She looks over the proposal and smiles at him, "yeah that looks good to me!"

Jack winces. "Sorry, I figured everyone knew. Yeah, I came to Abnormal Psych class one day a month or so ago and walked out thinking that everyone was out to get me. I tried to stab CJ... Professor Cregg. Luckily, she forgave me."

Jack writes up the proposal and drops it on Drusilla's desk.

"Shit! Well I guess CJ can handle herself, so it could have been worse and since it wasn't really your fault of course she'd forgave you. You seem alright now so that's good," she tells him sounding a little concerned for him

Jack grins at her. "Yeah. I'm good. Better than good, actually. I just try to keep a minimum safe distance between me and Professor Drusilla."

Paige leans in so only Jack can hear her "you and everyone else in class!" she says smirking

Jack nods. Emphatically. "She's over there, and all of us are waaaaaaaaaaaaay over here. What do you think? I mean, with all the strange people in this school, is she one of the weird ones, or just a really creepy human with the ability to hypnotize people?"

Paige looks over to Drusilla, "well if I had to say, I'm not entirely convinced she's human no. But well the term human seems pretty subjective around here. Someone called me non-human the other day!"

Re: DISCUSSION: CLASS PROJECT

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-18 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack glances at her. "You look human to me. Then again, so does the professor. *You*, however, don't freak me out."

She smiles "thank you Jack, I'm glad I don't freak you out, cos I'm guessing that'd make this project significantly harder!"
