Abnormal Psychology (11-18-05)

Drusilla is reading over last week's essays and growing increasingly angry. She glares at Cameron, then scribbles on an essay, then glares at Cameron again.

"Murder," she snaps, after everyone has signed in. "What drives one to murder another? Ignore petty questions of self-defense or euthanasia. This isn't an ethical debate. What causes one person to murder another? Is it insanity?"

"We're going to work on class projects. Joint class projects. This counts as your midterm grade." Drusilla looks irritated at the thought of handing out projects. "You're going to develop psychological experiments to be run on your fellow students." She thinks for a minute. "You should probably have their permission first, so do a permission slip. And don't hurt the little boys and girls irreversibly. Don't run the experiment, though. That comes later, after your midterms have been approved and the player gets OOC permission from the mods for you to do them."

She looks around. "Pair up. Cameron, you get to be partnered with whoever's left over, or if someone is out today. Then each of you discuss what you'd like to do, and write a 100 word proposal for your experiment. We'll talk about experimental design another time." Drusilla's smile was malicious. "And at that time, we'll introduce you all to hell statistical analysis."

Drusilla looks angry. "Cameron Mitchell. Vala Mal Doran. See me after class. Separately."

"Anyone who has missed a class essay needs to make it up or I'll start giving detentions for missed homework. This includes excused absences. If you'd rather not go back and look up what was missed, come and see me and we'll work out a special project for you to do to make up your grade."

Re: DISCUSSION: MURDER

[identity profile] pure-blooddraco.livejournal.com 2005-11-18 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There are many things that could drive a person to murder. Jealousy is one. Sometimes you decide that if you can't have someone then no one can. Another is duty. If someone told you to kill somebody and bad things would happen to you, you would do it. It's hard to kill someone under these circumstances but there is no way out of it really. You do it to keep yourself alive.

There are many types of murder. I think that some might even be justifiable, however, most murder's are not.

"While I am not much for murder, I suppose that sometimes, it is necessary. Politics, in particular, seems to leave a loophole for such activities."

Duce leans back in her seat, contemplating the question. "How we feel about it? So, do you want to hear about how Freddy and Jason movies cause me to get all revved up and damp in the panties, or do you want to hear about how murder is a moral institution and completely hypocritical since it's against the law for, say, us, to kill someone but most prison systems still have the death penalty available? Just clarifying which angle to go with."

Vengeance is one possible reason, wanting restitution for wrongs done to you is a powerful motivator.

Partners: [livejournal.com profile] the4thsister and [livejournal.com profile] time_agent

Hypothesis: Fear negatively affects memory

Experiment: Two groups. Both groups are given a list of words to memorize for a set amount of time. The list is then taken away. One group (the control group) is asked to recite as many of the words on the list that they remember. The other group is asked the same thing, but is told that for every word missed (either forgotten or misremembered), they will suffer a punishment (to be devised later).

Expected result: The second group will display a statistically lower ability to retain the list of words.

Jack looks at the grade on his paper and groans. He's got to do some extra credit.

He glances at Dru, and tries to figure out a way to talk to her that doesn't involve talking to her. Sadly, even he is not that creative.

Figuring that CJ will exorcize him if necessary, he approaches the teacher. "Professor? I need to discuss extra credit."

Re: CAMERON MITCHELL - AFTER CLASS

He made his bed, now he's got to sleep in it. Cameron tries not to look nervous as he approaches Drusilla.

"You wanted to speak to me, ma'am?" He tries to sound cheerful.

"You wanted to talk, Professor creepy-ass scary chick Drusilla?" Vala hopes very hard it's just about the make-up work, but she's kind of scared it's not... and scared more for what the bitch wants with Cam....
