The Library is Open - 11/17

Methos is bemusedly staring at his new pet, a salamander -- the kind that lives in fire. He managed to find a glass terranium that can withstand high heat and the salamander is happily ensconced in it. A sign in front of the terranium announces, "Name the Salamander!" and slips of paper, pens and a drop box are immediately to one side.

"You tell him, Zero." Parker growls along with her. "Grrr."

Methos' attention is finally drawn to the other end of the desk. "What in the bloody buggering hell is going on here!" he demands.

Mmrrow! Prreeet mow ree.

//He turned me into a cat! Do something!//

"Wyndam-Pryce turned Zero into a cat for no reason," Parker says, holding her friend up for Dr. Pierson to see. "Get your sword out, okay?"

Methos groans. "Another one? Zero, don't eat the salamander, okay? Much too hot for you."

*At this point more than a little hysterical, she attempts to wiggle out of Parker's arms for to attack the librarian's face. It's not funny!*

In self-preservation, Methos gently scratches behind Zero's ears. "We'll fix this. Somehow. Last time, though, I think it took about a month to wear off for the other student this happened to."

He sighs and turns to Wesley. "Can I see the stack of books you brought in? Please?"

*panicked kitty caterwauling*

//But Thanksgiving is in a week!//

Parker pets her fur down, and mutters, "I promise, if he can't turn you back, he's pate'. Really."

Parker wrangles Zero, still glaring at Wesley, and pouts. "You're sure you don't want to get out the sword? He's really got it coming. He tried to blame Zero for carlessness! He's the one that brought them here in the first place!"

"I'm really, really sure I don't want to get the sword, Parker. I can only kill him. If he is maliciously responsible for this, I can hand him over to Dean Bristow. Which do you think is worse?"

"Oh. Never mind. I know the answer to that one from sad experience." Parker grins, much more cheerful. "Carry on, sir. Don't let me stop you."

*Settles down in Parker's arms, happy with this arrangement.*

"Right, then." Methos waits expectantly for Wesley ~~to get back from meeting~~ to put the books down on the desk.

Wesley is now halfway across the room, staring in horror at the homicidal librarian, two malevolent women, a very annoyed cat, and the pile of books lying on the floor, at least one of which has spilled pages after it cracked its spine.

Oh, my God, I just ASKED to go see the Dean. I am insane.

Another deep breath. "I did not do a damned thing. I came in with my personal library and asked your assistants where you were. The next thing I knew, that one "-- points -- "had metamorphosed into a cat. I have no more idea what happened than anybody else."

Methos steps out from behind the collections desk and kneels to start gathering up the books, tenderly collecting pages from the bruised book.

Wesley blushes; he was brought up to treat books better than that. He kneels and reaches out for a volume.

"Right. So one of these books turned Zero into a cat. Obviously, just handling the book isn't enough ~~or I wouldn't be down here picking them up because I have no desire to join the ranks of cattus~~. So which one is it?" The question is rhetorical as Methos sifts through the books.

"I have no idea. They've never done anything like that to me. They're books, dammit, not weapons!"

Janet snorts. "Books are weapons," she says.

Methos smiles, a bit wryly. "These books? Can be weapons." He rises to his feet and takes the stack he's gathered to the Circulation Desk.

Wesley follows sheepishly with his volume and lays it next to the stack. "Knowledge can indeed be a weapon, but Miss Swerval didn't know a thing about that book."

"I wasn't speaking metaphorically about the knowledge within them. Yes, the knowledge might be a weapon, but some of the books we have are weapons in and of themselves." Methos sighs and shakes his head. "I don't claim to understand it, but there it is."

Wesley starts to give the librarian a dubious look, then thinks better of it and stares at the cat. "Is she some sort of enchantress?" He crouches and addresses Swerval. "Do you have any idea how to get yourself out of this mess?"

[[*cough* "Swerval" means "good" in Zero's odd lexicon. It's not her name. Heavens' knows I made the same mistake, though.]]
