Speech Comm

[Again in a turtle neck, she moves easier than the day before. Less wincing, and she's smiling radiantly. The desks are gone, replaced by small square tables and chairs.]

301--Theory

Today we're going to discuss non-verbal communication. Body language. It's essential that we know how to read one another because nonverbal communication makes up more of the message than you'd imagine. Words delivered flatly do not pack the same punch as a message accompanied by a physical manifestation of ethos, pathos, and logos.

So today...we play poker. [She passes out decks of cards and chips] Pay attention to the body language of your fellow players. You'll be expected to use this info tomorrow, so you can take notes if you need to. I've got cheat sheets and rules on the tables for those of you who don't know how to play Five Card Draw.

((as a player, you need to try to describe in detail your physical reactions...for your fellow players work tomorrow. Thanks!))

[Jack looks pretty much lit-from-within with happiness, and lounges at his table.] With my luck today, pretty much NOBODY can beat me.

So deal Jack...you've got your four. ((feel free to make a new thread for play))

Anya sits down at the table across from Jack. She's excited [smiling and giddy, though looks a little disappointed when she sees the chips and no place to cash in money], though not as excited as she would be if they were playing for real money.

She's got one hell of a poker face though, and she is going to win!

Anya picks up her cards and smiles very BIG. She looks around, trying to read the others.

She places two cards down and announces, "I'll take two."

[Jack deals her two, and collects her discards. Still not quitting with the big grin.]

Anya picks up her new cards and is very pleased. She still has her smile and now has a gleam in her eyes. Oh yeah, she's taking this one.

Rory frowns as she sits. "I suck SO BAD at poker. It's not even funny."

Taking a cheat sheet and the last chair at the table, D'anna smiles to those already seated.

[Jack deals out cards to the other three, grinning at them.] Anyone need help with the rules?

"I know how to play. I'm just bad at it," Rory sighs, looking at her cards.

D'anna takes her weird four-sided cards as she scans quickly over the cheat sheet and list of rules. Gathering that this game is similar to Triad back home, she sets the two sheets down on the table next to her and beings to arrange her hand, frowning. "I'm good for now, thanks."

[Jack examines his hand and then turns it face down on the table. He sits with his hands casually folded just behind his facedown cards, and waits for anyone to ask him for cards.]

Rory carefully pulls two cards from her hand, and sets them on the table, frowning. "Hit me."

[Jack raises an eyebrow.] That's blackjack, not poker. [He deals her two cards, and scoops up her discards.]

D'anna slips three cards from her hand and discards them. Unsure of the terminology, she looks from Rory to Jack, "cards... please?"

"Shh," Rory says. "You knew what I meant." She bites her lip, carefully arranging her hand with an air of great concentration.

Bets, anyone?

Anya smiles and sits up just a bit straighter.

"I bet two of these red chips."

ooc: do the chips have monetary amounts attached, or are they even different colors?

Having rearranged her hand to her liking, D'anna shrugs and puts two chips into the pot. Her expression is as neutral as possible as she leans back in her chair.

Rory frowns, and bites her lip. She puts a single chip in the pot.
