Philosophy classroom: Ethics class #4, Monday, 2-4pm

"Today's topic is power and responsibility, and I would like to remind you all that your grade comes from your discussion, not your presence. If you don't feel comfortable talking, write something down and hand it in to me. Being a silent warm body in the classroom is no different than not turning up."

[ooc: And I would remind you that I leave posts open for the whole week. If you post 'shows up and takes a seat' I know you're still alive, but you need to actually address the discussion topics to pass the class.]

"It's just --" Shane begins fitfully, gesturing at the door to indicate the classroom. "How can -- how can she say ... how can she say that? How can she say that and look at me like she fucking cares about me and she did that to you?"

She takes a deep breath and rakes her hand through her hair as she shakes her head.

"I don't know," Tara whispers. "I wish she just hadn't come to class today. I think... I think maybe she's answering the way she is because she's angry with me. I just..." she takes a deep breath, and stands.

"Shane? I need to scream now, okay?"

Watching from her place on the floor, Shane nods slowly, her eyes still dark and troubled but understanding. She ducks her head and folds her arms over it again, covering her ears.

Clenching her fists and resting her forehead on them, Tara screams, pouring out her anger and her frustration and her fear into what rapidly becomes a wail of anguish.

Lungs emptied, Tara sinks down onto the floor, pressing her cheek against the soft, padded wall as she tries to breath past the hitches in her breath.

When the screaming stops, Shane lowers her arms and shifts around on the floor to face Tara, resting her head against the wall. Reaching up, Shane ever so gently smooths Tara's hair out of her face and, slipping her hand underneath the dark tawny fall, cups the back of Tara's neck.

"Better?" She says softly.

"Better," Tara nods, twining her fingers in Shane's other hand.

"I gave her detention."

Letting out a breath, Shane stares at Tara for a moment before letting out a weak huff of laughter. "Fuck," she whispers. Lifting her head up, she leans in and presses a kiss to Tara's lips. "You did?"

"I did," Tara replies, kissing Shane back but, conscious of their teacher/student roles, keeping it very chaste. "You don't even want to know what she said after you left. But the detention wasn't for what she said, it was how she said it. She was rude, and antagonistic, and disrespectful - to me, as well as to more than half the students in this class."

"Yeah... you're probably right," Shane murmurs, letting out a ragged sigh as she lets her head fall back against the padded wall with a muffled thump. "I don't wanna know. If you tell me, I'll just wind up staying in here for the rest of the hour."

Thinking about what she had wanted to do to Maia when she'd given her that wounded, sympathetic look, she closes her eyes, shaking her head. She wasn't a violent or angry or aggressive person by nature, not by any means... but... this was a situation unlike anything she'd ever dealt with before.

"Baby, I need to go back out soon and be the teacher." Tara sighs, frustrated. This is why teacher/student relationships are illegal where she comes from. The conflict of loyalties... "Are you going to be okay?"

Opening her eyes, Shane nods slowly. "Yeah," she says quietly. "Just... just gimme a ... gimme a minute and I'll be out there with you, okay?"

"Take your time," Tara replies, stroking her hand over Shane's hair. "I'd stay with you, if I could."

Taking a deep breath, she drops a kiss onto Shane's head and stands to leave.

"I know," Shane murmurs, giving her a small but deeply thankful smile all the same as she gives Tara's hand one last squeeze.
