Philosophy classroom: Ethics class #4, Friday, 8-10am

[ooc: My deepest apologies for posting this so late.]

Tara smiles worriedly as the students come in, checking face after face.

"Today's topic is power and responsibility, and I would like to remind you all that your grade comes from your discussion, not your presence. If you don't feel comfortable talking, write something down and hand it in to me. Being a silent warm body in the classroom is no different than not turning up."

[ooc: And I would remind you that I leave posts open for the whole week. If you post 'shows up and takes a seat' I know you're still alive, but you need to actually address the discussion topics to pass the class.]

"Sure, pal. So you wanna be the rescuer or the damsel in distress?"

"Well, crap. I'll play rescuer first, since I can't think of a good scenario where I don't want to be rescued. You think of anything?"

"Um, okay. Well, how about an undercover thing? I could be playing along to get captured to get close to a marked person."

"And you'll probably have to do something shady to get in with them and all, right? WHich brings you to the point where you're confronted by the cops or something."

Re: Second Hour

[identity profile] kawalsky.livejournal.com 2005-11-07 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, yeah. Either something shady or something stupid. But if I went to pull it off so I could get captured by them, as a prisoner say, I wouldn't want to be rescued, because then it'd ruin my chance."

"Right. SO even if you COULD get word out to your fellow officers, you wouldn't, because that would blow your cover. Or get you killed. Or both. Nice."

Re: Second Hour

[identity profile] kawalsky.livejournal.com 2005-11-07 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Yep, exactly. So anyone coming to rescue me, whether their intentions were good or not, would screw everything up because I didn't want to be rescued. Stepping in where you're not wanted could get people in trouble. But.. that is a pretty unique circumstance. Maybe we should go for something more mainstream."

"Hrm. Guess that'd be my cue. Lessee, why would I NOT want to be resued? Crap. What about... a soldier on the field who's either greviously wounded or slightly wounded, and the medical attention could be better applied to someone else? I got nothin."

Re: Second Hour

[identity profile] kawalsky.livejournal.com 2005-11-07 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
"No, that's true. I mean, you'd want to be rescued eventually, but I've.. I'd imagine that some people would be selfless and would want their friends seen to first."

"I mean, if a medic's just going to say 'yeah, the fact that you can see your spleen means you're toast' or 'dude, walk it off' means that someone else gets denied that medic time. But it sounds lame."

Re: Second Hour

[identity profile] kawalsky.livejournal.com 2005-11-07 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. The medic's word is gospel, and you've gotta trust him or her to do their job and know how to triage. But I can see why you'd wanna tell the medic to go somewhere else, whether you know you're not as bad as your pals, or if you're bluffing because you just want them to get treatment first."

"Yeah. The only things I can think of is if I were rescued over someone else who I deemed more worthy. But I like your idea. I just can't think of anything else."

"Nah, your idea's cool man. It makes a lot of sense."

"Thanks. Should we talk about this more or wait to tell the class?"

Re: Second Hour

[identity profile] kawalsky.livejournal.com 2005-11-07 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
"I think we've got it worked out enough to tell the class what we came up with. We've got two pretty good scenarios where playing hero wouldn't really go down well."

"Right. Now we just gotta wait our turn to present."
John sits back and waits for everyone else to report. (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/324514.html?thread=15926178#t15926178)
