Tara smiles worriedly as the students come in, checking face after face.

"Today's topic is power and responsibility, and I would like to remind you all that your grade comes from your discussion, not your presence. If you don't feel comfortable talking, write something down and hand it in to me. Being a silent warm body in the classroom is no different than not turning up."

[ooc: And I would remind you that I leave posts open for the whole week. If you post 'shows up and takes a seat' I know you're still alive, but you need to actually address the discussion topics to pass the class.]

Phoebe turns to Tara, and there are tears in her eyes.

"I didn't mean to take you away from the rest of the class, Tara...it's just...how can I be a defender against evil when I couldn't even save a friend?"

"That's what my TAs are for," Tara smiles, dismissing the concern. "And you can't, Phoebe. But you're not a defender against evil. You're a champion for good."

She cocks her head, turning kind eyes onto Phoebe. "Do you see the difference?"

Phoebe nods. "Yeah, I do. It's just, so much information coming at me...and I'm trying to balance."

She leans against the wall. "My perceptions of good and evil are constantly shifting, Tara," she says finally.

"I know," Tara nods quietly. "But Phoebe... that's the way it's supposed to be. Once you put things into little boxes, you've lost. You can't fight for good when you think you know what it is. It sounds like nonsense, but it's true. The people who think they've got it all figured out are usually the most blind and cruel of all, even when they're wearing white hats."

"You won't," Tara says simply. "Look at the company you keep. You're in love with a demon, Phoebe. If you were that sort of person, you wouldn't be. You wouldn't let yourself be."

"I'm me, not someone who can just be programmed to be the exact thing someone wants me to be."

"You're welcome." Tara smiles and opens her arms, offering Phoebe a hug.

Putting her arms around Phoebe and holding her for a moment, Tara asks, "are you ready to go back out, now?"
